Sinclair, Ewers cop Milo U-18 tennis titles

Felix Ewers and Sicquena Sinclair captured the Milo Open Junior Tennis Under-18 titles, respectively, as the curtain came down on the two-day tournament on Sunday at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.

Ewers defeated Chevaughn Crawford 7-5, 6-3 in the boys' Under-18 final. Earlier in the semi-finals, he thrashed William Berry 6-1, 6-4 while Chevaughn Crawford beat Simon Levy 6-4, 6-2.

In the girls' Under-18 final, Sinclair recorded a hard-fought come-from-behind 3-6, 7-4, 7-4 victory over Haughton. In the semi-finals, Haughton defeated Shantal Blackwood 2-6, 7-5, 7-3 while Sinclair stopped Michealann Denton 6-1, 7-5.

Dylan Levy beat Dimitri Bird 6-4, 6-3 to win the boy's Under 16 trophy. In the boys' Under-14 final, James Cruze registered an exciting 6-3, 7-5 victory over Blaise Bicknell to take the trophy. Tradianne Barrett captured the girls' equivalent with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over Ashley Lowe.

Ruben Pinchas copped the boys' Under-12 title ahead of Senna Summerbell. In the girls' equivalent, Stephanie Davis whipped Lowe 6-2, 6-0.

In the boys' Under-10 final, John Azar defeated Stephen Davis 8-0.

Llockett McGregor, organiser of this year's championships, said he was very pleased with the level of competition.

"I think it was an excellent tournament because we had a record number of entries; it was also very competitive and we also had a lot of the top players in the island competing in it," said McGregor.

"I am hoping for a bigger, better and more competitive tournament next year, because we are all about improving and if we can continue to improve our tennis, then we will have a lot of good players in the island," McGregor added.
