Grange expects huge turnout at Easter Carnival

Jamaicans can brace themselves for some exciting times in motorsport, boasted Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, who anticipates a record-breaking crowd attendance at the Easter Carnival Dover race meet, which will be held on April 25.

"I am expecting a large turnout, as usual, and another successful season this year," Minister Grange told The Gleaner yesterday.

The Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) launched its 2011 motor-racing season last weekend at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.

Hilary Jardene, president of the JRDC, said that the increased number of competitors and exotic cars would result in a stronger spectator and media turnout at the event.

"This year is going to be the best year ever of circuit racing at Dover Raceway," Jardene said fervently.

"Spectators are going to be entertained as they have never been entertained before, for the simple reason that the type of motor cars that we are going to have this year are superior to motor cars we have had before, when it comes to the top-flight drivers."

Jardine said they were expecting a turnout of 10,000-15,000 spectators.

Mike Henry, minister of transport and works, who was also present at the launch, voiced his support and plans for the proposed Kingston Grand Prix, which is to take place in a revived downtown Kingston.

"Most cities ultimately develop into a Grand Prix circuit over time, and it is what attracts a lot of visitors," said Minister Henry.

"It has a great deal of attractions in terms of the excitement and the development and I, therefore, want to be part of the initial development and to refocus on downtown Kingston, as the prime minister wants it to be developed," Henry added.
