WESTERN BUREAU:Galaxy recorded their first win in the Hanover Football Association (HFA)/The Captain's Bakery & Grill Major Football League, when they surprised the much-vaunted Lucea 1-0 at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea.
The Galaxy team, which looked good in their close 2-1 loss to Haddington and their 2-2 draw against Jericho Rangers, joined the list of winners in the eight-team competition, courtesy of Anor Fraser. The loss was Lucea's first in four games.
In a keenly contested game where both teams were guilty of squandering good chances, Galaxy struck the game's only goal in the 21st minute when Fraser managed to hit the target.
couldn't stop loss
Despite a concerted assault in search of an equaliser, the Ramon Foster-led Lucea team could not find a way to stop the loss.
In another game on Thursday, Jericho Rangers and Haughton Meadows, who are both enjoying a pretty decent season to date, played out a 1-1 draw on Haughton Meadows' home turf.
Damington Doeman fired Jericho Rangers into a fifth-minute lead, but Haughton Meadows drew level three minutes later from the boots of Keano Williams.
In another game played earlier in the week, leaders Superstars, who started the season with back-to-back wins against Logwood and Jericho, made it two draws in their last two games when they were held to a 1-1 finish by Sandy Bay on Wednesday. In their previous outing, they were also held to a 1-1 draw by the exciting Haddington.
no surrender
Sandy Bay got off to a dream start, grabbing a third-minute lead from the boots of Ricardo Collins. However, Superstars refused to surrender their unbeaten record, storming back to grab a share of the points through Kadian Hamilton's goal in the 35th minute.
It was all Logwood in Wednesday's second game, as they emerged impressive 2-0 winners against Haddington in their much-anticipated clash.
Jellandre Spence fired Logwood into the lead in the 15th, and Leighton Miller added the clincher in the 82nd.
The new-look competition, which has attracted a $1.2-million-sponsorship tag from The Captain's Bakery and Grill - that came on board at the start of the season after the Hanover FA went three years without sponsorship - will see the eventual champions taking home The Captain's Bakery & Grill Trophy and $100,000, in addition to qualifying for next season's Western Super League.
The competing teams are Superstars, Lucea, Sandy Bay, Haddington, Galaxy, Haughton Meadows, Logwood and Jericho Rangers.
