Though he won the battle against Doug Gore's Audi TT-DTM at Easter Monday's Carnival of Speed at the Dover Raceway, St Ann, David Summerbell Jr believes he will have to go shopping if he is to have a chance against Gore in a rematch.

"The Audi is a real race car. At first, we were nervous when we saw the high-profile support team behind its preparation. But my team took it in strides and rose to the occasion," said Summerbell Jr, who registered an hat-trick of wins, including both sections of the stellar event - the Thundersport race.

Rated as the Caribbean's number one circuit racer, the Campion College past student said Gore's car was really fast but his instincts got the better of him.

"Trust me, he was shockingly fast in the rain," Summerbell Jr told Automotives.

In response, Gore agrees his instinct took over and warns at the next encounter, he will be taking the chequered flag.

"The next time, it will be totally different. We have already began making the modifications to the car," said Gore.

In the final event of the Easter Monday meet, the over 10,000 patrons got their money's worth as Summerbell Jr and Gore locked horns in a bumper to bumper rivalry, taking turns in leading the pack.

At one stage, the fans from western Jamaica went wild as Gore looked like a likely winner, but Summerbell Jr wrapped things up on the penultimate lap.

Despite the afternoon's downpour, the fateful fans stood their ground, waiting anxiously for the showdown between Summerbell's Mitsubishi Evolution 8, Gore's Audi TT-DTM and Chris Campbell's BMW M3.

Out of contention

Mechanical problems, however, forced Campbell out of contention, so the battle was now between Gore, Summerbell Jr and the RX7 Mazdas driven by Peter 'Zoom Zoom' Rae and Alan Chen.

In the day's first showdown, Gore's objective was to secure a podium finish and ensure his car returned to the pit in one piece.

"In our second event, we borrowed some tyres from Chris Campbell and did some changes to the car. While on the track, I radioed the guys and told them how powerful the car felt and that I was going all out for the chequered flag," said Gore.

But when Gore made his move, both he and Summerbell's car made contact and the Audi skidded off the track.

"This is the biggest ever crowd we have had at Dover," said Hilary Jardine, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers' Club, who had high praises for ATL and Adam Stewart for their contribution to the meet.

Apart from the Gore-Summerbell Jr showdown, Kyle Gregg was outstanding and demonstrated that he could be in contention for the crown in the near future.

Other top performances came from George Bayley, Gary Gregg, Troye Riley, Sebastian Rae, motorcyclists Greg Cross, Randy Dyer, Adrian Blake, Halquin Rodney and André Norman.
