Stephenson nets rocket for San Jose

NEW YORK CITY (CMC):

Jamaican midfielder Khari Stephenson and Grenadian Shalrie Joseph both found the target on Saturday in Major League Soccer.

Grenada international Joseph, the New England Revolution captain, converted a penalty kick four minutes after half-time to give his side a 1-0 victory over Vancouver at Gillette Stadium.

Jamaican Stephenson drilled a 25-yard rocket past Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer to seal a 3-0 victory, the first for the San Jose Earthquakes over Columbus Crew at Buck Shaw Stadium.

In Santa Clara, California, Stephenson finished things off in the 62nd minute when he converted off a feed from Bobby Convey and Lenhart.

Chris Wondolowski tallied for the third time in four matches in the 50th minute, opening the door on a San Jose rout of the Crew, which also featured former Crew forward Steven Lenhart's first goal as a member of the Quakes in the 59th minute.

The Quakes saw the game out despite losing Brandon McDonald to a straight red card in the 79th minute, after an off-the-ball incident with Columbus forward Tommy Heinemann.

It was San Jose's first win in seven matches, a drought that stretched back to March 26.

The result emphatically snapped Columbus' seven-match unbeaten streak and left the Crew a bit shell-shocked at allowing three goals in the space of 12 minutes.

In Foxborough, Massachusetts, Joseph stroked home his fourth goal of the campaign from the spot.
