Naggo Head poised for hat-trick

Two-time defending champions Naggo Head Primary are well placed to retain their Swizzzle Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Primary Track and Field Championships, after yesterday's second day of the three-day competition at the National Stadium.

After four finals, Naggo Head lead the standings with 27 points ahead of Angels (17.5). They are followed by Excelsior (17), Lawrence Tavern (15), New Providence (14), Greater Portmore (11), St Francis (9), Harbour View (7.5) and St Patrick's and Rousseau (4).

Jhennel Harriott of St Francis and Tre-Vonne Smith of New Providence were the most outstanding performers on yesterday's second day of the championships, as they shattered the girls' long jump and boys' high jump open records, respectively.

Harriott leapt an impressive 4.98m to erase the previous mark of 4.97m, which was held by Kerry-Ann Gocoul of Naggo Head.

Saskkia Wiggan of Angels was second with a jump of 4.95, followed by Chantel Johnson of Greater Portmore, 4.63.

The 12-year-old Harriott, who was in tears after winning the event, said she was very surprised by her record-breaking performance.

"It was very hard at first, but I know God was by my side and so I knew I could do it," she said.

Smith won his event in a new mark of 1.57m, eclipsing the previous mark of 1.55m set by Jerado James of Naggo Head in 2010.

The Lawrence Tavern pair of Rojae East (1.45) and Lemare Burke (1.45) finished second and third, respectively.

Smith was very delighted with his performance.

"It feels great to break the record. My coach has been trying very hard with me so I could come to Primary Champs 2011 and get the gold, and that's what I did," Smith said.

The 11-year-old Smith added that he would like to attend Calabar High in September.

"I knew I could break this record as I jumped 1.65 before in training, but it feels good just the same to break it," he said.

The day's other outstanding performance came from Andrew Ashby of Naggo Head, who broke the boys' Class Two 300m record in the heats when he ran 42.43, erasing the previous mark of 42.95 set by Jhair Lehosts.

Thirty-four finals will be contested on today's final day of competition.
