Parchment stars as St Elizabeth top Westmoreland

Out-of-favour Jamaican opener, Brenton Parchment, was in brilliant form last weekend when he stroked a century and claimed five wickets to lead St Elizabeth to first-innings honours over Westmoreland, in their top-of-the-table two-day Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup clash at Alpart Sports Club, St Elizabeth.

Parchment, who was left out of Jamaica's four-day team during the recently concluded West Indies Four-Day Tournament, made 122 and took five for 32 as Westmoreland, who started the weekend in second position in Group A, slipped to third in the standings.

St Elizabeth won the toss and inserted Westmoreland and, thanks to the off-spin of Parchment, they were able to restrict the visitors to 204, despite a good batting effort from former Under-19 captain, Paul Palmer Jr, who made 77.

Thanks to Parchment, the home team, in reply, went on to declare their first innings at 280 for seven. St Elizabeth Technical all-rounder Cassius Burton, 49, gave Parchment best support against national pacer Jason Dawes, who took three for 63.

Westmoreland, batting a second time, reached 108 for four when stumps were drawn with Palmer getting 28, as West Indies Under-19 spinner, Donovan Nelson, claimed two for 41.

In the other Group A showdown, played at Elgin Town, St James, led by Andrew Walker, claimed first innings points over Hanover. Batting first, Hanover were dismissed for 206, with Kadian McKenzie getting 83, as Walker bagged 6-67.

St James, in response, tallied 214 (André Woodstock 79; Jermaine Blackwood 3-28).

Hanover batting a second time closed at 196-7, with Kadian McKenzie scoring 52 and Walker claiming 4-58.

The results moved St Elizabeth into sole leadership of the group with nine points, the same as St James, who have played three games, while the former have played two. Westmoreland, who have played two games as well, are third with seven points.
