Tyres: keeping you separated from the road
In an effort to keep your vehicle moving smoothly along waterlogged roads during the hurricane season, all effort must be made to ensure tyres are in tip-top condition. Dean Corrodus, national rally champion driver for 2006 and 2009, has some tips on how to select the best tyres for all seasons.
"The water dispersion qualities and tread pattern of a tyre are very important. So, tyres with a tread pattern that channels the water away from the base quickly is best suited for travelling in the rain," he advised. Corrodus, however, noted that each tyre manufacturer will present tread patterns differently.
"Tyres with wide, diagonal grooves that start from the middle of the tyre, and lead outwards to the edges, are good tread patterns and are highly recommended," he said.
Worn tyres
On the other hand, he explained that tyres with a shallow tread depth would indicate the tyre is worn and, therefore, dangerous on the roads during rain.
"So, I would advise that you pay close attention to the tread-wear indicator on your tyre, displayed by the 'TWI' mark and a bump that runs across the base of the tyre, indicating the tread depth," Corrodus said.
Kenute Hare, director of the Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport and Works, said tyres with a tread depth of less than 1.6mm should be discarded. Also, he said motorcycle tyres with a tread depth of less than 0.8mm should be replaced immediately."
Best grooves
Lanarda Morris, an engineer at The Bureau of Standards, said the best tyres are those which have very deep grooves down the middle, as they hold a traction rate of B or higher.
"In addition, drivers need to ensure their cars are properly aligned, tyres balanced and inflation is correct, in keeping with the size of the vehicle and the load being carried," she said.
According to rally driver Richard Rerrie, "Some tyres perform better in still water, while others will move sharply through the water and some will hydroplane, but if you are not aware of the capabilities of your tyres, it is best to drive slowly and not take any chances."
In fact, Charmaine Gray, mother of three, said she remains very conscious of the road conditions while driving and does not take any chances.
"I always ensure my tyres are properly inflated at all times but moreso when I have to travel on wet roads. I make sure they have the proper treading to take my family and me home safely."
