WASHINGTON (AP):

A District of Columbia police officer has been arrested on a theft charge, accused of stealing money from an 85-year-old woman.

Court documents say 35-year-old police sergeant, Aisha Hackley, was arrested yesterday at the headquarters of the Second District, where she works.

Hackley is accused of forging the signature of an elderly woman she met during a fraud investigation and then depositing 10 checks totaling more than $43,000.

The documents say Hackley told a Bank of America fraud investigator that she had met the woman last December after the woman reported being a victim of a lottery scam.

Her attorney, Kenneth Auerbach, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Hackley appeared yesterday in DC Superior Court. She's due back on June 30.
