Hydel hold off Vaz to retain title

Victory came by only three points, but it was enough to ensure another title for defending champions Hydel at the three-day Bigga Jamaica Independent Schools Association Prep track and field championships which ended at the National Stadium yesterday.

Hydel scored 283 points, many-time champions Vaz on 280. They were followed by Wolmer's (103), Mona (99), Lannaman's (96), Quest (94), St Andrew (74), Our Lady of the Angels (59), Queen's (43), Ardenne (35), Portmore Missionary (31), Emmanuel Christian (31), Stella Maris (28), Montego Bay (24) and Sts Peter and Paul (22).

In the closely contested cham-pionships, Hydel led with 261 points, ahead of Vaz 260, going into the penultimate event of the competition. The Ferry-based Hydel stretched their advantage to 273 to 268, this after sprinting to victory in the 4x200m, with Vaz finishing in a disappointing third behind Lannaman's. Hydel wrapped up the championships despite finishing second to Vaz in the final event of the competition.

One of the stars of the day was Shaquan Allen of Hydel who captured boys' Class Two sprint double. Allen won the 100m in 13.37 seconds, followed by Jiore More-Gayle from Wolmer's (13.66) and Hydel's Jaise Foster (13.70). Allen returned to take the 150m in 20.70 in front of Mona's A'Khari (20.80), and Jaise Foster of Hydel (20.97).

In the Class One girls' 100m final, Alandria Dawkins of Hydel, sped to victory 12.95 seconds to beat Leone Farquharson of St Andrew (12.97) followed by Modiann McDonald of Vaz (13.24). Pacino Fearon of Queen's won the boys' equivalent in 12.58, ahead of his teammate Brandon Brown, 12.77 and Vaz's Yashawn Hamilton, 13.07.

Vaz's Nekeyah Martin took home the girls' Class Two 100m in 14.03 in front of her teammate Ebony Campbell (14.06) and Jamani Richards of Hydel (14.26).

Akeem Thomas of Wolmer's won the boy's Class One 200m in 25.26 ahead of Queen's pair of Pacino Fearon (25.30) and Brandon Brown (25.38). Aleeaha Dawkins of Hydel won the girls' Class One 150m in 19.60, in front of Leone Farquharson of St Andrew (19.96) followed by Vaz's Modiann McDonald (19.97).
