Wynter strikes gold

Timothy Wynter struck gold in the 13-14 boys' 50 metres backstroke, at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships (CCCAN) in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, on Wednesday. His winning time of 26.96 seconds bettered his national and age-group records of 27.76 set at the CARIFTA games earlier this year. He also erased the old CCCAN record of 28.21 in the process.

In the 15-17 girls age category, Breanna Roman and Kendese Nangle, both earned silver medals. Roman finished the 50 metres breaststroke in 35.31 and Nangle did a personal best time of 58.53 in the 100m freestyle. Nangle also earned a silver medal in the 200m backstroke on Thursday. She finished the race in 2:24.05, setting a new national senior and age-group record.

"They have been performing very well under adverse conditions, as when they arrived (in Puerto Rico) the housing for the swimmers wasn't ready," said newly appointed Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica president, Martin Lyn. Lyn, who recently returned to the island from Puerto Rico, says he hopes to send a male and female relay team to the Olympics in 2016.

Jamaica's medal tally at the CCCAN at press time stood at nine - one gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
