- Eagles now joint leaders in skittles
Cup holders Eagles crushed Rowe's Strikers 6-0 to be joint leaders of Zone A in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof skittles competition last Sunday at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza.
Eagles thus joined long-time leaders Starliner (who rested on Sunday) at the top of the elite teams standings, each with 14 points from nine matches.
In their head-to-head clash some weeks ago, Starliner beat Eagles and, although joined at the top by their arch-rivals, are in pole position with three rounds remaining.
Former champions Eastern All-Stars are third in the standings with 10 points, following their 6-4 win over Waltham Strikers, while the reigning Pattex Cup champions Mystix stopped Dragon 6-3 to hold down fourth spot.
In other matches played in the Super Sunday promotion at Hughenden Plaza, the all-female Mystix Lady Strikers clipped Hangover 6-5, while Mister C whipped The Dip 6-1, and Mercury defeated Olympic Strikers 6-3 in Zone B, which is contested by the unseeded teams.
Willies Strikers, who were inactive on Sunday, lead the zone with 14 points - two clear of Lady Strikers with Mister C third on 10 points.
The competition continues tomorrow in Portmore with home team Hangover up against Mister C at Mega Way (near MegaMart) and Eagles vs Eastern All-Stars in the day's feature at Hangover, while Starliner will oppose Rowe's Strikers and Waltham Strikers take on Dragon, both at Starliner Skittles Club, Waltham Park Road. Matches start at 1 p.m.
- Wray & Nephew pools down to last 16
The Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum all-island team pool tournament heats up tonight with teams from across the island meeting for the first time in the last 16.
The preliminary round ended last Saturday with the final qualifiers - Kendan from Montego Bay and Marshalls from Savanna-la-Mar - scoring identical 5-0 wins over Montego Bay Proper B and Club 300 B, respectively.
In another match on Saturday, Club 300 A beat Palm Court 4-1, stopping the latter from qualifying.
The draw for the last 16, which was conducted on Sunday at the Hot Shots Pool Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road, is as follows:
In the rural area, three matches will be played at Kendan Pool and Games, 32 Jarrett Street in Montego Bay. The matches scheduled are unbeaten Montego Bay Proper A vs Marshalls, Montego Bay Proper B vs Gold Room from Savanna-la-Mar and home team Kendan vs Strawberry from Old Harbour, all starting at 7 p.m.
In the Corporate Area, the remaining five matches will be played at Hot Shots. These are the unbeaten Chelsea Strikers vs The Spot from Old Harbour; unbeaten Chelsea Seals vs Mystix Imports; Hot Shots Fury vs Spot One; Georges from May Pen vs Mystix Knights and Upper Level from Mandeville vs Bombay Lounge. The first three matches at the venue start at 6 p.m., the final two at 7:30.
The winners will advance to the quarter-finals next Saturday at Hot Shots, after which the semi-fiinals and final will be played later that night.
- André Russell shines for Jamaica Broilers
Jamaica and West Indies player André Russell led his old team Jamaica Broilers to a massive 228-run win over Red Stripe in the second round of the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over KO competition at the Red Stripe Oval, taking six for 25.
Batting first, Broilers went on a run spree, racing to 387 for five off their allotted 30 overs - Fabian Lakeman 79 not out, Wayne Morgan 62, Aaron Johnson 55, André Russell 49; Andre Elliott 2-48, Junior Ricketts 2-74. Red Stripe 159 all out off 23 overs - Alex Elliott 54, Arlington Whittick 30; Russell taking 6-25, Morgan 2-19.
AT MONA: Defending champions LIME beat NWC by nine wickets. NWC 64 all out off 26.3 overs - Duran Whyte 26; Ryan Francis 5-7, Yannick Elliott 2-12. LIME 67 for one off 11.4 overs - national player Horace Miller 36 not out, Shaun Lodge 21 not out.
AT CHALMERS AVENUE: NHT beat Sagicor by 55 runs. NHT 199 for six - Lionel Morant 82 not out, Herman Henry 45. Sagicor 147 for eight - Kemar Marshall 34, Hugh Meredith 28; Quennue McKinson 3-29, national player Bevan Brown 2-34.
AT JAMALCO: Jamalco defeated Continental Baking Company by 35 runs. Jamalco 169 for six off 30 overs - former national youth player Peat Salmon 93, Errol Thomas Jr 25; Darren Royal 2-23. Continental Baking Company 134 in 28.4 overs - Oneil Weir 28, Ronville Brown 27; Derrick Spence 3-27, Salmon 2-7.
Play continues tomorrow with the playing of the Reggae Jammin 50-over league. The matches on are defending champions Jamaica Broilers vs NWC at Spring Village, Continental Baking vs LIME at Jamaica College, Red Stripe vs Digicel at Red Stripe Oval, Spanish Town Road; JUTC vs Jamalco at Jose Marti, and Sagicor vs NHT at Chalmers Avenue. All matches start at 10 a.m.
- UWI stop Gleaner in BH football
UWI blanked high-riding The Gleaner 2-0 in a KSAFA/Western Sports Business House Division I match at UWI on Wednesday. After stopping leaders and defending champions Petrojam earlier this month, Gleaner stumbled badly against home team UWI. Playing without their midfield general Donovan Alvaranga, who broke a leg in the last match, The Gleaner lacked creativity, allowing UWI to take control for long periods. Kemar Douglas opened the scoring for UWI in the 33rd minute for a 1-0 lead at half-time, then Cornel Cain sealed the deal for UWI in the 66th minute of play.
Meanwhile, in recent Scotiabank Group-sponsored KO matches, Wray & Nephew clipped Carib Cement 1-0 with Cetano Rainford netting the winner in extra time, Grace beat Red Stripe 3-1, thanks to a brace from Andrew Chisholm, while NWIA blanked ACS 2-0 with goals from Robert Grant and Shawn Nelson. And Scotiabank clipped UWI 2-1 in an away match with goals from Akelie Martin and Richard West in either half.
In Division I, Petrojam and the unbeaten Wisynco are joint leaders with 14 points, while the unbeaten Jamaica Customs with 19 points lead Division II ahead of NHT (12 points).
In today's big Division I clash, Wisynco oppose the 2009 champions Scotiabank at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, NWIA vs Petrojam at Bull Pen, and Wray & Nephew vs Carib Cement at Chalmers Avenue, all starting at 4 p.m.
- Cobbla Church League resumes
The New Testament Church of God Cobbla church football league, played at the Cobbla Youth camp grounds, near Spaldings, will resume tomorrow with defending champions George North entertaining Gully Strikers at 2 p.m., while at 4 p.m. Lazio take on Spring Ground.
The competition was postponed last weekend to facilitate a special church event.
George North, who are unbeaten after three games, lead Zone One with nine points, five clear of Christiana Strikers and Gully Strikers, who are both locked on four points. Spring Ground lead Zone Two on seven points over the pair of West Road and Lazio, who each have four points.
With four remaining sets of matches to complete the preliminary round, only George North have secured a quarter-final berth.
- Mile Gully Youths win Manchester Under-15
Mile Gully Youths emerged the unlikely inaugural champions of the C&D Construction and Engineering-sponsored Manchester Under-15 championship with a stunning 1-0 win over Kendal.
Christopher Laylor, who has since been selected to the parish Under-15 team, got the crucial strike in the 38th minute.
Mile Gully Youths, essentially drawn from a pool of Manchester High players, were beaten twice in the preliminary round, going down 2-1 to Mile Gully FC and 1-0 to DC Strikers. However, they rebounded to snatch the final spot to the second round before carrying out giant-killing moves.
Rushane West, another player selected to the parish Under-15 team, scored in the 56th minute that secured a semi-final win against Hillstars, one of the unbeaten, impressive teams from the second round.
- Jamalco football league kicks off today
The 2011 season of the Jamalco-sponsored summer football league kicks off today with a double header at the Wembley field in Clarendon.
Seventeen teams drawn in three zones will participate. Last year's sponsorship was in excess of $1 million.
At 2 p.m., Zone Two teams Top Hill and Hunts Pen will clash, while the 4 p.m. feature match will see defending champions New Bowens matching strides with the home side Wembley.
Action continues tomorrow at the same venue. At 2 p.m. Juventus will entertain Invincible while at 4 p.m. the Jamalco Under-17 team takes the field in a semi-final match from the Clarendon Under-17 league.
- Clarendon lead Juici Patties Confed league
Clarendon lead both the Under-13 and Under-15 sections of the Juici Patties Junior South Central Confed league.
Clarendon kicked off the competition last Saturday at Brooks Park with 1-0 wins over St Catherine in both the Under-13 and Under-15 contests. They then achieved maximum six points again from both tiers on Wednesday. St Elizabeth's Under-13s were beaten 2-0 while their Under-15 counterparts went down 3-1.
In other results from Wednesday: Manchester's Under-13 drew with St Catherine 2-2 while their Under-15s won 2-1.
In today's round, St Elizabeth will host St Catherine and Clarendon host Manchester.
- Pines Imaging U-17 football kicks off
The Pines Imaging Centre-sponsored Portmore Under-17 football league will kick off tomorrow at the Ferdie Neita
The league should have started last Sunday, however, the organisers met and decided to push the commencement of the league to tomorrow.
Eighteen teams are registered for the tournament and Wanderers are the defending champions.
In matches to be contested on the day, defending champions Wanderers open their 2011 campaign against Cedar Grove at 1 p.m., while at 3 p.m. Portmore United tackle Braeton United in a Braeton derby. Meanwhile, this year is extra special for Pines Imaging Centre as they have been doing business in Portmore for 10 years. To mark the occasion, each team will get 10 Puma balls.
- Portsmouth carve out tense win
Portsmouth carved out a fairly tense 34-run win over Reid's Pen at the Portsmouth ground last Sunday, in action from the Milo-sponsored Portmore Metropolitan U-15 Cricket League.
Reid's Pen were well poised to force a challenge as they were 143-4, but rash strokes by their batsmen and decisive bowling by Portsmouth's bowlers saw the visitors lose their last six wickets for 13 runs.
Scores in that match: Portsmouth 190-9 off 32 overs (Ahmed Campbell 30, Javian McFarlane 29, and Ricardo Mills 28; Ronaldo Harris 3-19, Courtney Dowdie 2-39). Reid's Pen 156 all out (Marco Grandston 46, Dowdie 27; Simon Lee 3-10, Oshane Wright 3-11).
At Hamilton Gardens, Colours defeated Hamilton Gardens by eight wickets. Scores: Hamilton Gardens 58 all out (Ramone Francis 3-8, Whentley Palmer 3-18); Colours 59-2, Marlon Parkin 21.
At Bridgeport, Ken's Wildflower demolished Cumberland by 10 wickets. Scores: Cumberland 34 all out; Javel Glen 4-10, Amunik Russell 2-6. Ken's Wildflower 35-0, Davion Clarke 18. Last Sunday's winners have already booked semi-final spots. They are Colours International 18 points, Portsmouth 18 points, and defending champs Ken's Wildflower 16 points.
- Royal Lakes beat Village in shoot-out
Royal Lakes outshot Village Lynx 6-5 and gained the lead in Zone A as action continued in the St Catherine FA Under-17 Football League last Wednesday.
With the win, Lakes leap-frogged Village with eight points from four games, while their opponents dropped to second in the zone with six points from three matches.

Siegel Knight came up trumps for defending champs Portmore United as his two goals led his team to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the Colin Fagan-sponsored Portmore Under-15 football league at the Passagefort field last Sunday.
Portmore have now won six games in as many matches and lead the standings with 18 points.
In other games, Westchester defeated pointless Garveymeade 3-0; Clifton surprised Wanderers 3-1 and Daytona shocked Cumberland 2-1.
