Johnson cops BNS tennis title

Damion Johnson copped the major title as the Bank of Nova Scotia Amateur Tennis Champion-ship and Professional Tournament culminated at the Liguanea Club last Saturday.

Johnson defeated Dwayne Pagon 6-2, 6-1 in the final. His winnings included the championship trophy, gift certificate and a cash prize of $50,000. Pagon also received a trophy and $30,000.

The semi-finalists were also rewarded. Dominic Pagon and Matthew Rodrigues each received $20,000. The quarter finalists Brenton White, Daniel Harris, Dane Vernon and Karil Kasyano also received $15,000 along with trophies.

In the BNS Open Amateur event, Dominic Pagon and Dwayne Pagon defeated Damion Johnson and Daniel Harris 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the men's class one doubles title.

In the men's class two doubles event, Leighton Burton and Lloyd Nelson were 6-4, 6-1 winners over Ransford Hamilton and Lee Oakley.

Meanwhile, Garth Darby and Franklyn Grennion were 7-5, 6-1 winners over Marlon Brown and Andrew Madden to take men's class three doubles title.

Monique Todd, vice-president, marketing, public and corporate affairs at Scotiabank, said the tournament was very important for the development and transition of the juniors in the island.

"It is great to be involved in the tournament. It was exciting and we are pleased with the development at the youth level," Todd said.
