Trinidad dominate CAGC

The 55th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships ended on Saturday with the best Jamaican showing coming from the super seniors duo of Dennis Atkinson and Fred Sutherland.

Atkinson and Sutherland ended the tournament third behind Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad & Tobago took top honours in three of five categories - the Ramon Baez trophy, Francis & Steele-Perkins and women's George-Teale trophy. The Puerto Ricans captured the Hoerman Cup and the Higgs and Higgs trophy.

The Jamaican team struggled at the outset of the championships and failed to recover. The Hoerman Cup team finished fifth with a total of 1217. Fabian Campbell shot one under par on the final day, his best score of the tournament. On the individual leader board, Campbell topped the Jamaican team and finished sixth with scores of 81, 74, 73, 70. Teammate Matthew Smith finished one stroke behind tied in eighth (73, 77, 72, 77).

The Jamaican duo of Sean Morris and Keith Stein ended the Ramon Baez trophy event tied in fourth with Puerto Rico. The Trinidadians held off the pair from the Dominican Republic to win by a single stroke.

Robert Chin and Greg Chong had to settle for sixth in the Francis & Steele-Perkins teams. The Trinidadians won this category, finishing eight under par, with the Puerto Ricans ending the championship nine strokes over par.

Jamaica's George-Teale team of Jodi Barrow, Leiza Blakeley and Michelle Gabay finished the championships in sixth, with a combined score of 683. Trinidad and Tobago captured the trophy with a total of 589. Puerto Rico finished in second with 604.

Based on points, the Puerto Rican team took home the Arthur Ziadie trophy. Trinidad & Tobago placed second. Jamaica finished seventh overall.
