Here are some more highlights of Wealth Magazine's second anniversary at Bin 26, Devon House, on July 27, and chartered accountant Leighton McKnight celebrated his big 5-0 on Independence Day.

Thursdaytalk - Hottest topics on the cocktail circuit

Out of order

1. The absence of the head of state from the Emancipendence celebrations has not gone down well at all! Protocol watchers are saying the head of state being missing from these national events speaks to a lack of respect or understanding of the role by the office holder and those who appointed him in the first place!

Release the confetti

2. The announcement of awards and honours and the inclusion of a foreigner on the list of those to be honoured for "doing his job" have some questioning the criteria being used to assess awardees. Some are so peeved they have dubbed it 'Confetti Season'!

All talk

3. Some say he's all talk and no substance, as they say, when he was first engaged, he was so loquacious he gave the impression the Middle Easterners, their cash and cheque books, would have been lining up to follow him to Jamaica to invest! Since his arrival, however, none of that has arrived and not only that, but the much-talked-about access has not materialised either, causing some to question the premise of not only his engagement but his contribution!

Get him out

4. The absence of the chairman from the opening night is not sitting well with members of the company. And with word surfacing that he was spotted at the musical festival out west, he has many calling for his removal as chairman, and they want him gone before the next season; as they say he's a hindrance to expanding the role and capacity of the organisation!

Horses out the gate

5. First he was offered a senatorial appointment. Then that went to one who is yet to make a contribution to justify the appointment! Now the new appointment is seen by some as a consolation prize, but because it is expected to produce investment miracles in a climate of worldwide stagnation and decline, it has some wondering if it's not a case of securing the gates after the horses have bolted!

Angry workers

6. The workers who collected their official monthly pay cheques and were told to hold onto them awhile and they would be told when they could be encashed, are chomping at the bit.

Million-dollar man

7. The neighbours and everyone else are talking about the post-election 'mansion' . They say the modest home the family occupied before the election has given way to a massive mansion that is the talk of the town. The fact that the builder is also known as the million-dollar man - a million bucks being the rumoured cost to get his official approval for projects - comes as no surprise to many!
