Christopher Browne, writer, producer and director of the newly released movie Ghett'A Life, says Kevoy Burton was perfect for the lead role.

Burton is the Ardenne High School upper-sixth form student who portrayed Derrick in the film.

Browne discovered Burton through famous Jamaican casting agent Cecile Burrowes, who had been instrumental in the success of movies such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Cocktail.

Burrowes helped Browne find Burton through Ardenne's drama club, an organisation Burton is an active member of.

According to Browne, when he found Burton, he knew, the diamond in the rough was the man for the job.

"First of all, I was very impressed with the way Kevoy read the lines during the audition. He actually brought the script to life and demonstrated the character's determination and vulnerability, which were key for the movie," Browne told The Sunday Gleaner. Burton joined the cast six weeks later for shooting on July 19, 2010.

Focused and dedicated

Burton was very focused and dedicated and he knew his lines, pointed out Browne.

The budding actor had to visit the gym every day, for an entire month with the goal of bulking up.

According to Browne, one of the main challenges he faced when working with Burton was his inexperience. The youngster knew nothing of boxing.

"Kevoy had the athletic build of a lightweight boxer, it was now up to us to teach him how to box and how to better himself as an actor," Browne explained.

"He learned his lines, did the workouts and performed his role excellently, forgetting the pressure that came with the lead role."

Browne believes the audience responded extremely well to Burton's portrayal of Derrick and his depiction of the character's journey of discovery. The director also hinted that Burton might have a role in his next movie 10 years from now as he fits the age of the character.
