Commission of enquiry - Paulwell, PNP hypocritical on JPS issue

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The former minister of energy, Phillip Paulwell, is disingenuous and hypocritical in his pronouncement and public disapproval of the current minister, Clive Mullings', announcement of a commission of enquiry into the Jamaica Public Service Company's (JPS) billing practices.

Let memory serve the minister that it was his government that carted us off like slaves to the previous owners of JPS, which were badly indebted in America. They came, made their money by the billions with the said billing practices, and then handed us over to our new slave masters to continue doing us more injustice.

Mr Paulwell and his party ought to apologise to the Jamaican people for the atrocities we are now suffering at the hands of JPS, rather than trying to rubbish what little steps others are taking to identify and solve the problem.

While I may agree that a commission of enquiry is not the ideal step to deal with the issue at hand, it might very well be the best option at this time. We already know very well that the power company's practices seem to be sinister, and every time somebody makes a complaint and displays his ridiculous light bill, you can be sure that that there is a letter in our daily newspapers the following day from the JPS hierarchy giving an explanation. Then you hear nothing more until another complaint and then the same reaction.

A commission of enquiry will definitely highlight and challenge publicly their evil deeds. Whether we take them to task from there on is a different case entirely. To suggest that the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) already exists for those investigations is mere stupidity. The OUR is nothing but a PR agent for JPS.

Disband the OUR and use those salaries to fund the enquiry.
