KC, St George's in Roper Cup extravaganza

THE 37th renewal of the Roper Cup football extravaganza between North Street rivals Kingston College (KC) and St George's College will be contested today.

The event will take place at KC's Cloverly Park starting at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Under-14 teams will kick off the proceedings, followed by the Under-16 match with the winner on aggregate from these two matches deciding the George

Thompson Trophy.

This will be followed by the Under-35 fixture and then the Over-35 game, with the clash between the current Manning Cup squads set to start at approximately 5 p.m.

Every year a former player who has made significant contribution to the deve-lopment of the sport is honoured.

arnold mcdonald to be honoured

This year, KC's Arnold 'Dudu' McDonald will be the honouree.

In the meantime, there were calls from both schools to reinforce the spirit of camaraderie and friendship.

Margaret Campbell, headmistress of St George's said: "This is about friendly rivalry and friendly competition and we are united in more ways than one ... so purple or blue, we are all Jamaicans."

Charley Grant, vice-president of the Kingston College Old Boys' Association, sided with Campbell saying they agreed that they need to revisit the values and attitudes of the past and try to reestablish those principles with the younger generation.
