- LIME vs Jamalco in BH 30-over semis
Defending champions LIME will meet high-riding Jamalco in the second semi-final of the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over Business House cricket competition at Chalmers Avenue tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m.
The winners will meet National Housing Trust in the final on Sunday, October 9.
Cup holders LIME boast the best all-round team in Business House cricket, with the likes of national player Horace Miller, former West Indies under-19 player Andre McCarty, former national youth player Yanique Elliott, Melbourne Senior Cup player Damion Jacobs and clubmate Fitzroy Peterkin, along with Omar Allison and Kensington's Ryan Francis present.
In light of this, LIME should start favourites en route to retaining the title. However, having won the 35-over final a fortnight ago, Jamalco are brimming with confidence and should prove tough opponents.
They will look to former national player Maurice Kepple, former Jamaica under-19 representative Peat Salmon, in-form batsman Errol Thomas Jr, along with Devon Gordon and the veteran campaigners Winston 'Sala' Osbourne, Derrick Spence and Collis Johnson to counter the best that LIME have to offer.
Meanwhile, the two semi-final matches in the Reggae Jammin 50-over league, scheduled to be played last Sunday, were rained out. These were defending champions Jamaica Broilers vs NHT at Mico and LIME vs NWC at Chalmers Avenue. Both will be played on October 23.
- Heroes weekend pool tourney
Guinness, in association with Pool Tables and Billiards Supplies, will stage a Heroes Weekend Pool Extravaganza at Hot Shots Pool Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road, from Saturday, October 15 to Monday, October 17 (Heroes Day).
The will vie for a top prize of $45,000 and trophy on Saturday and Sunday, while Heroes Day has been set aside for the ever-growing list of female players.
Entry fee is $1,500 for men with $1,800 for late entries, while women will pay $500.
The beaten finalists among the men will receive $15,000, while the losing semi-finalists will each receive $5,000. The champion female gets $15,000 and a trophy.
This marks the first major tournament since the Wray & Nephew-sponsored all-island tournament in the summer.
- The Dip Invitational skittles tournament
The Supreme Ventures/Mandingo sponsored The Dip Invitational nine-a-side skittles tournament moves into its final round tomorrow with defending champions The Dip opposing Willies Strikers at the Dip in Gregory Park, starting at 2 p.m.
Other matches scheduled are Starliner vs Waltham Strikers at Mister C Skittles club (Spanish Town) in Zone 'A', Mystix vs Dragon at Mercury Skittles Club in Zone 'B', while the ladies team will oppose Olympic Strikers at the The Dip and The Dip vs Willies in the second match at 5 p.m. Match time is 2 p.m.
Both The Dip and Starliner are unbeaten in three matches in their respective zones and both could meet in the quarter-finals. Another dangerous team is Willies Strikers, beaten finalists in the Wray & Nephew White Overproof competition some weeks ago.
The next major skittles tournament, the Henkel-sponsored Pattex Cup, will cue off on the first Sunday in November.
- Three-on-three BH basketball play-offs
The best-of-three quarter-finals in the Business House Basketball Association's three-on-three competition are scheduled to start on Monday at the Stadium Courts starting at 6 p.m.
In Division I, NWC will oppose Sagicor on Court 1 starting at 6 p.m; last year's Division II champions Jamaica Teachers' Association vs MegaMart on Court I starting at 6:45 p.m.; G4S vs NCB on Court 3 starting at 6:45 p.m.; and Grace Cannings vs Digicel on Court I starting at 7:30 p.m.
In Division II, National Land Agency will oppose NHT on Court 2 starting at 6 p.m.; UDC vs The Gleaner on Court 3 at 6 p.m.; BOJ vs Cool Pros on Court 2 at 6:45 p.m.; and the unbeaten Western Sports vs VMBS on Court 2 at 7:30 p.m.
The play-offs continue on Wednesday, October 5 with the teams meeting in Game Two.
- Akeeli Martin nets four for Scotiabank
Led by four goals from Cavalier's Super League player Akeeli Martin, defending champions Scotiabank Group slammed arch-rivals JNBS 5-1 in the Western Sports/JNBS Norman Goodison Inter-Bank football league as action in the second round continued last Sunday at the NWC playing field, Mona.
Martin netted in the 48th, 68th, 76th and 80th minutes after Stefan Bartley had opened the scoring for Scotia in the 12th minute. This second-round clash was a replay of last year's final between both teams.
In other matches played on Sunday, NCB defeated CIBC/First Caribbean 3-0 at NWC field, thanks to a double strike from Delon Falconer in the 11th and 55th minutes, and Victor Riley in the 55th.
In the third match, BOJ blanked RBC Royal Bank 4-0 at Old Men's Hockey Field, with Jermaine Flemming netting twice, with Andre Campbell and Dashean Meeks scoring one each.
The competition moves into its third round tomorrow with JNBS vs the Sagicor Group at the NWC field starting at 2 p.m., CIBC/First Caribbean vs RBC Royal Bank in the second match at 4 p.m., and unbeaten Scotiabank vs BOJ at Old Men's Hockey Field, Mona, at 3 p.m.
- Evergreen, Hasty Good tops in North West
Evergreen and Hasty Good emerged the respective champions in the North West Manchester netball and football competitions, after both finals were completed at the Mile Gully Community Centre last Sunday.
In the netball tournament, Evergreen rallied from deficits in the first three quarters to carve out an exciting 21-20 win in the final seconds of the match. Following a 3-3 scoreline at the end of the first quarter, Greenvale B, who had beaten Harry Watch in the semi-finals, led 9-7 at half-time and 17-14 at the end of the third quarter.
However, Evergreen, who had scored a major upset in the semi-finals by defeating Greenvale A, outscored their opponents 7-3 in the final quarter to secure the $60,000 first prize and 10 medals. Greenvale pocketed $40,000 and 10 medals also.
Harry Watch also continued a miserable day for Greenvale by winning the third-place play-off 23-14.
It would not end there, as their hopes in the football competition were dashed when they were beaten 1-0 by Hasty Good in the finals.
Harry Watch had earlier signalled their intentions, defeating a strong Mile Gully Masters team 2-1. In their semis, Greenvale prevailed 4-1 on penalties over Evergreen, after the two had ended 2-2 after regulation and extra time. Main sponsorship for both tournaments came from constituency hopeful, Mikhail Phillips.
- Four matches on in Portmore cricket
Four matches are scheduled as the return games in the Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Portmore Cricket League bowls off tomorrow morning.
A key matchup is between red-hot defending champions, Colours International, the current Group B leaders, and last year's runner-up Bridgeview at the Portsmouth ground.
Colours (12 points) will tomorrow seek revenge from Bridgeview, who embarrassed them by 98 runs in the first round. Since that game both clubs have had contrasting results. Colours have won three straight games and are on top of Group B with 12 points, while Bridgeview lost three straight games and are at the foot of the standings on four points. In another Group B game, Portsmouth take on Portmore Pines at Hamilton Gardens. Over in Group A, Belmont battle Ken's Wildflower at Lime Tree Oval, and Washington play Reid's Pen at Bridgeport sports ground. All matches begin at 11.
- 15 schools confirmed for Portsmouth football rally
Fifteen schools, including 13 primary and two preparatory, have confirmed their participation in Portsmouth Primary/Institute of Sports first-ever one-day football rally for primary and preparatory schools on their school ground, next Friday.
The competition kicks off at 9 a.m. and go until about 3 p.m. Entries for the rally close next Wednesday. In an earlier interview with The Gleaner, Kevin Reid, the chief organiser of the rally, said: "The main aim of the competition is to promote and develop football within the schools and build the confidence of young players, while providing the experience needed for the upcoming LIME Primary League."
He added: "We have not ruled out teams from other parishes, and we have a team coming all the way from Morant Bay in St Thomas."
The organisers disclosed that talks with a major sponsor are ongoing. Portsmouth Primary won the Portmore leg of the LIME-sponsored league.
- Parkway are champions
Boston-based Parkway FC, nicknamed 'Boston FC', made history after they stunned pre-final favourites, Souvenir Strikers, 4-1 in the final of the Waterford Corner League football tournament at
Mark Walters, Davion Campbell, Anthony Greenland and Jermaine Clarke scored for Parkway, while veteran player Loxley Thomas netted Souvenir's goal from the penalty spot.
At the end of the match, councillor/caretaker of the Waterford Division, Rupert Walters, handed over the Lynford Jones trophy to Parkway's coach, Rodger Myers.
The trophy is named after the late Lynford Jones, former coach of Waterford Primary and former president of the Waterford Sport Council. The league was seen as a tool to bring back the love and unity between the communities within Waterford.
- Three teams vie for semi-final spots
After six rounds of matches, three teams - Westchester Nuckuz, Ken's Wildflower and Garveymeade - will do battle for the two remaining semi-final spots in the Colin Fagan-sponsored South East St Catherine Domino League. Meanwhile, Waterford and Passagefort United advanced to the semi-finals of the competition in contrasting fashion last Sunday. Waterford dismissed Garveymeade 250-218 to move to 21 points, while Passagefort United also jumped to 21 points without shuffling a single domino as Cumberland did not show. In other games last Sunday, Westchester Nuckuz (17 points) now occupy third place after their 250-222 win over Rising Sun, while Ken's Wildflower moved to fifth and 15 points after their 250-238 victory over Portsmouth United. The competition continues tomorrow with the final preliminary-round games.
- Teams battle for Peter McConnell champion trophy
Eight teams, including National Premier League early leaders Waterhouse, will vie for the Peter McConnell Champion trophy and a number of prizes in the inaugural Tru-Juice 10th anniversary football fiesta and family fun day at Tru-Juice Sports Complex in Bog Walk, St Catherine, this morning, starting at 10 o'clock. The other clubs include Portmore United, Arnett Gardens, two Super League teams, champions of KSAFA Cavalier and host club Tru-Juice, in their fourth year in the South Central Confederation Super League. Three other St Catherine clubs - Frazer's Whip, the St Catherine parish knockout champions, the Division One kingpins Treadways
Peter McConnell is the managing director of Trade Winds Citrus Limited, makers of Tru-Juice.
Meanwhile, the teams are placed in two groups, with 30-minute games during the preliminaries.
The final game will be played for one-hour with two 30-minute halves.
