Scott steers JC to sweet victory

Nicholas Scott flourished as Jamaica College burned Camperdown on their home field at Bellevue yesterday to emerge from their Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup Group D encounter 2-0 winners.

Scott was on target in the 18th and 67th minutes, bringing his tally of goals for the season to nine.

"The team plan was to come out and score at least three goals and my teammates helped me to score two," Scott disclosed. "The coach told us that one team cannot beat us twice in one season, so we were to come out hard and fight, and we came out victorious today," the 17-year-old Tivoli Gardens resident added.

The 21-time champions JC now lead the group with 15 points, while Camperdown slipped to second on 13.

The defending champions were obviously out to avenge their opening-round 1-0 defeat to their opponents as they came out aggressive from the opening whistle.

The huge gathering of spectators who tried to catch a glimpse of the game from all available vantage points were treated to a very physical game, which saw its first casualty in the fifth minute when Camperdown's Shavar Henry had to leave the field to be treated for a gash on his head.

Salt was soon rubbed into Camperdown's wounds, as Scott gained possession just outside his opponent's area before getting by two defenders, rounding the keeper and slotting home, despite the desperate attempts by two recovering defenders to thwart his effort.

Camperdown enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but created little by way of goal threats. They came closest to scoring in the 30th minute when Hakeem Smith was played through on goal. He rounded the outrushing keeper before getting off a shot, only to see it cleared off the line by JC's Damion Brown.

JC doubled their advantage in the 67th minute after Scott side-footed home from close range, courtesy of a lovely pass by Kevaughn Frater.

Camperdown's coach, Christopher Bender, was gracious in defeat, as he believes despite his team dominating possession, they failed to create goalscoring chances.

"They (JC) played a little more aggressive and their defence stood up well in terms of denying us goal-scoring opportunities," Bender said.
