Ladylike finishes strong for Cash Pot Trophy

On a wet and frustrating day at Caymanas Park yesterday, LADYLIKE, running at odds of 4-1 with Dane Nelson aboard, outfinished long-time leader AWESOME CAMILLE to win the $2.95 million Cash Pot 'One For Me' Trophy over 1200 metres for native bred two-year-olds.

This race marked the start of the Supreme Ventures Triple Crown series for two-year-olds, which offers total prize money of $10.5 million.

Nine youngsters reported for the seventh running of the race and in the end LADYLIKE, under a bustling ride from Nelson, came through midway the last furlong to beat Gary Subratie's AWESOME CAMILLE (9-5) under champion jockey Omar Walker by 1 1/4 lengths.

Finishing fast

The 33-1 outsider EXOTIC GOLD finished fast into third place, another 2 3/4 lengths away, while the previously unbeaten EL PATRON, installed a 7-5 favourite under leading jockey Dick Cardenas, was left with too much to do after suffering a rough passage on the inside approaching the half-mile.

LADYLIKE bided her time in fourth passing the half-mile as the Gary Subratie-trained AWESOME CAMILLE led narrowly from POOCHIE LIU (5-1) and ALL CORRECT.

As they swung into the straight, LADYLIKE was produced three wide with her challenge. She caught up with AWESOME CAMILLE a furlong out and after a brief duel, gained the ascendancy to notch her second win from four starts.

In the absence of trainer Dwight Chen, who is off the island, LADYLIKE was prepared and saddled by his former assistant trainer, Oneil 'Sweety Man' Markland, who recently graduated as a full-fledged trainer but is yet to saddle his first winner.

"She's a nice filly who will go places," said Markland.

"I thought she was hurriedly ridden when beaten by EL PATRON in the Rum Fire Dash on September 24, but she was prepared to run a big race today, having worked exceptionally well and Nelson gave her a perfect ride," added Markland.

LADYLIKE is owned by Howard Hamilton (Hamark Farms) and bred by HAM Stables Limited. She is a grey filly by Distorted out of Knightley.

Meanwhile, the reigning champion sprinter, SAINT CECELIA, made all convincingly to win the None Such Sprint over 1200 metres with Shane Ellis riding for trainer Spencer Chung.

Ellis notched only one win as did arch-rival Cardenas aboard INVICTUS (4-1), while Walker was winless on a day when the debutante PHILISTIA (26-1) and AOKI LEI (21-1) provided the upsets, necessitating carryovers in the Pick-9 and both Super-6s to tomorrow's Heroes Day card.
