Big guns ready for Walker Cup showdown

Charlie Smith and Kingston College (KC) will put their unbeaten streaks on the line this afternoon when they face off in the quarter-finals of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports (ISSA)/Gatorade/ Digicel Walker Cup competition at the Constant Spring Sports Complex, starting at 3 p.m.

In the opening match of the double-header, the Anthony Patrick-coached Bridgeport will battle Camperdown at 1 p.m.

Bridgeport, who are also unbeaten in this year's Manning Cup, are favourites to get the better of their opponents.

The fixture between Charlie Smith and KC will see both teams at full strength and is expected to be a highly competitive contest. The teams advanced to the Walker Cup in fairly comfortable fashion.

Prolific team

The Jerome Waite-coached Charlie Smith finished atop Group C with 28 points. They have also been the most prolific team in the Manning Cup, as they netted 42 goals while conceding seven.

"We will have to come out and play some attractive football, and may the best team win," said Waite.

"We are confident and we just have to take it one step at a time because we haven't been playing to our full potential this season," Waite said.

Striker Michaelos Martin, who has netted 15 goals, along with his captain Javoni Simms' 10 goals, will lead Charlie Smith's hunt for success. They are expected to receive support from teammates Omar Price, Andrew Allen and Vishinul Harris.

Waite's opposite number, Trevor 'Jumpy' Harris, said his team would be going all out to win this year's Walker Cup trophy.

"We have not won anything in a long time, and this is an opportunity for us to win something for the school for this year," said Harris.
