Glenmuir look good for ISSA/Busta play-offs

Glenmuir High School are proving hard to beat in the ISSA/Busta Under-16 football championships. The undefeated red-and-white-clad boys proved too much for their neighbours Foga Road, beating them 2-0 in the feature game in Zone I on Friday at the Glenmuir playing field.

It was not long after the start that the gap between the teams became evident, four minutes to be exact; Xahn George finished well after getting a cross from the right and side-footing into the net.

Seeing how simple it was may have put the hosts in a stupor, as they quickly began to crowd the area in search of individual accolades. They looked good moving the ball out of defence and into midfield, but lost composure time after time as the 18-yard box appeared.

All the players, including Kanute McKenzie and Shemar Robotham, were guilty of individual play. So too were Ricardo Dennis and Kevon Lambert. The latter wasted quite a few chances before securing the win with a well-taken penalty in the 65th minute.

Satisfied with score

Given the vast amount of possession they had, this was hardly the score that was expected, but coach Warren Simpson was satisfied.

"They may have been complacent. Most of them underestimated the opposition and forgot all the tactical plans we had. Now we have to get them ready for the second round," he said.

Second round begins on Tuesday, with the Abner Wright Trophy up for grabs.

In the Under-14 raiser between the schools, Glemnuir won 3-1.

Jevaun Ennis put Glenmuir up a few minutes from the start for a 1-0 lead, which they held until half-time.

Foga Road equalised, but Geraldane Bennett made it 2-1 and Ennis returned to tie-up the points with the closing goal. With the win, Glenmuir qualified for the Clement Radcliffe Trophy play-offs, which also begin on Tuesday.

In other significant games played earlier in the Under-16 division, Kingston College (KC) continued their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Ardenne, and Spalding clipped Porus 1-0.

Among the Under-14s, KC were in a dominant mood, routing Ardenne 9-0, Cornwall College beat Herbert Morrison 2-0, Rusea's beat Anchovy 3-1 and Edwin Allen edged Denbigh 1-0.
