Dennis left with 'hard pill to swallow'

Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis, coach of Santos FC, was left with a hard pill to swallow after Barbican FC defeated his team 2-0 on Saturday in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Claro Super League football match at Bell-Chung Stadium.

The match, which started out like a Sunday morning stroll, ended with a victory cheer for Barbican through goals from Leon Brown (52nd) and substitute Ricardo Scott (70th).

"This is a hard pill to swallow," said Dennis. "I reminded this team today that we played two teams back to back, we took 12 points from them last year and we lost to those teams, so apparently we took them for granted and they came to win."

Dennis added: "Indiscipline cost us the game and this can't continue, so we have to make changes on this poor performance."

Turned up the heat

Both teams seemed to be on equal footing with no goal in the first half. Barbican turned up the heat in the second half when Brown broke away on the keeper, Mark Biryou, whom he beat to net the first goal.

Santos tried to come back at Barbican but were denied a goal by Barbican's keeper Nicholas Campbell.

At the other end Scott, who came on in the 52nd minute, got the better of Santos keeper and gave Barbican their second goal.

The visitors made a double change after getting their second goal, and Caven Genius, who replaced Brown went for a quick shot immediately after he came on, but Biryou denied Barbican their third goal.

Barbican's coach Shaun Charl-ton was 'proud' of his team's performance.

"I am very proud of my team and I think they performed well today. This is the first time we are beating Santos due to the fact that they won against us five times, so this is an accomplishment for us," said Charlton.

He added: "This is not a time to rest, but this victory means that it's just more hard work for us."

Only one other team registered a win in the day's fixtures, Greenwich Town, which secured a 1-0 home victory over Rockfort courtesy of Peter Cardoza's 30th minute goal.

In the highest-scoring encounter, Mountain View and August Town ended 2-2 at Excelsior High School's Courtney Walsh Oval. Andrew Morrison (62nd) and Adrian Kitson (71st) netted for Mountain View, while Omari Edwards (4th) and Roberto Fletcher (90th) scored for August Town.

Duhaney Park, courtesy of an own goal at the fifth minute, held defending champions Cavalier, for whom Fabian Nethersole equalised at the 82nd, to a 1-1 finish.

There was no goal in matches between the University of the West Indies and Rae Town at UWI Bowl; and Olympic Gardens against Constant Spring at Cling Cling Oval.

In the lower-tiered Major League, Police National went on the rampage at Pembroke Hall, spanking the homesters six-love. Fitzroy Dewar (22nd, 32nd, 65th) netted a hat-trick, while Alwin Morgan (38th, 68th) and Andrew Palmer (8th) accounted for the other goals.

In other results: Maxfield 1 (Damian Campbell - 44th), Shortwood 2 (Michael Ellis - 16th, Gavin McKoy - 62nd); New Kingston 0, Allman-Woodford 1 (Damian Williams - 11th); Jamaica Defence Force 1 (Oneil Spence - 63rd), Cooreville Gardens 1 (Andrew Anderson - 75th); Swallowfield 1 (Shevon Wright - 15th), Real Mona 1 (Jordan Moses - 32nd). The Bull Bay-Molynes United game was not played because police personnel were not present, while the Mead Forest-Brown's Town match was postponed.
