Fighter Jet the toast at presentation

Fighter Jet, the undisputed champions of western Jamaica domino, were the toast of last Thursday's end-of-season presentations and award ceremony for the 2011 J. Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum Western Domino League as they walked away with the two major awards.

The 'Jet', from the Carey Park community near Duncans in Trelawny, took home the competition's Premier League and champion of champions trophy alongside over $100,000 in prize money from the competition, which featured 20 teams from the parishes of Trelawny, St James, Hanover, and Westmoreland.

"This is a wonderful feeling. We put in a lot of hard work and now we are reaping the rewards," said Marlon 'Hero' Hamilton, the captain of Fighter Jet. "We must pay tribute to both the sponsors, J. Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum, and the leadership of Western Domino League for what was a well-organised competition.

Main awards

The main awards: Premier League - champions Fighter Jet - $100,000 and the J.Wray & Nephew trophy; second - Tropical Riddin - $70,000; third - Assassin - $50,000; and fourth - Tuff Gong - $30,000. Division One - champions Uptown - $65,000 and the J. Wray & Nephew trophy; second - Intouch - $40,000; and third place - Tornado - $30,000.

"It was a great season and no praise can be too high for J. Wray & Nephew, our sponsor," said Walford Morgraidge, president of the Western Domino League. "It is not only about their $400,000 sponsorship, it is also about the genuine interest they are showing in promoting the growth and development of domino here in western Jamaica."

In addition to the main prizes, awards were also handed out in several categories. These awards included: Most Disciplined Team - Long Bay United; Mid Season champions - Strike Force; End of Season champions - Assassin; and Cross the Table champion - Oniel Duffus.

Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, J. Wray & Nephew Overproof Rum's Corey Barnett said the company was pleased to be associated with the competition, which did not only produce high-quality domino, but also helped to further establish the brand in western Jamaica.

"We are happy and pleased with the relationship that we have established with the Western Domino League, and we will definitely be looking to move from strength to strength in the years to come," said Barnett. "We must single out president Morgraidge for the total commitment he has shown in making this competition the success it is."
