- Bevon Brown leads NHT to 50-over title
A fine all-round performance from national representative Bevon Brown enabled National Housing Trust (NHT) to score a 60-run win over Best Dressed Chicken KO champions National Water Commission (NWC) in the Reggae Jammin 50-over Business House cricket final (league) at Kensington Park last Sunday.
Brown, who represents St Catherine CC in the Senior Cup competition, made a top score of 65 for his team and came back to take 4-14 off 8.2 overs, bowling off spin.
On the previous Sunday, NHT beat defending champions Jamaica Broilers by 84 runs in the second semi-final at Mico, while NWC defeated former champions LIME in the other semi-final some weeks ago.
Scores: NHT 145 all out off 37 overs; NWC 78 off 29.2 overs.Batting first, NHT, playing without top batsman Nkrumah Bonner who is touring with the West Indies 'A' team, ran into early trouble by losing opening batsmen Lawaune Smalling (0) and former national under-19 Shacoya Thomas (3), both falling to pacer Fabian Forbes.
Housing Trust, captained by Quennue McKinson, soon slumped to 55 for five, before Bevon Brown steadied the innings with a confident 65 (two fours, one six), with support from Lionell Morant (21) and Ryan Campbell (18).
Forbes took 4-29 off nine overs, while Chris Senior supported with 3-31 off 10 overs.
NWC also started badly, losing Senior leg before without scoring to pacer Shaunlee Earle in the first over, and Forbes leg before to Frederick Hermitt for four. And when the in-form David Morgan fell for only five to make it 11 for three, NWC were in trouble.
Despite a brisk fourth-wicket partnership of 60 between Duran Whyte (37) and Oneil Wright (22), NWC collapsed into a heap after Brown removed them both. Earle supported with three for 30 and Hermitt two for 20.
- G4S, NLA are BH basketball champions
G4S and National Land Agency (NLA) won the three-on-three divisional finals in 2011 Business House basketball competition on Monday night, following contrasting wins in the fifth and final games at the Stadium Courts.
It required a game five to break the deadlock in both finals, but while G4S easily defeated JTA Cooperative Credit Union 33-22 in the Division I final, it was a different story in Division II.
National Land Agency and pre-season favourites Western Sports went into overtime after both teams were locked at 29-all at the end of regulation time. NLA, however, were not to be denied, winning 38-36 to take the title after trailing 2-0 at the end of game two.
Unbeaten in their first 20 matches, Western Sports suffered a setback when their top player, Rohan Robinson, was sidelined by injury in games three and four, enabling NLA to claw their way back at 2-2. Robinson was forced to play in game five as a result, but he was way below his best and Western Sports went under in a hard-fought contest.
Howard Edwards scored a game high 22 points for NLA, while Khaleel Smith dumped in 19 for Western Sports.
In the Division I final, skipper Roger Marshall scored 13 points for G4S, supported by Omar Barnes, nine, while Dave Blackwood sunk 10 for JTA.
The presentation function, sponsored by MegaMart, is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, December 3 at the NHT Sports Club.
- Scotia, NCB in Inter-Bank final
Unbeaten defending champions Scotiabank Group and NCB will meet in the final of the Norman Goodison JNBS/Western Sports Inter-Bank football competition tomorrow at the NWC playing field, Mona, starting at 3 p.m.
Both won their semi-final matches in resounding fashion at the same venue last Sunday. NCB drubbed BOJ 4-0, thanks to goals from George Clarke (2), Dwayne Salmon and Dellion Dixon. Scotia defeated Pan Caribbean 3-0 to make it seven in a row. Richard West scored a brace, while skipper Donovan Hibbert netted once.
- Mystix pool tourney coming
The Mystic Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road, will stage an eight-ball pool tournament on Saturday, November 19 for A, B and C class players.
The tournament offers a first prize of $30,000 and trophy, second $8,000, while the players finishing third and fourth will each receive $3,000. Entry fee is $1,500.
Meanwhile, Ruth Salmon and Francine Cardoza have won the last two weekly ladies' tournaments at Hot Shots, 103 Constant Spring Road. Cardoza won on Wednesday night, beating the previous week's winner Ruth Salmon 3-2 to claim the $10,000 prize and trophy.
- Brumalia House/Locker Room KO
The Manchester FA Knockout Cup sponsored jointly by Brumalia House and Locker Room continues tomorrow with three games.
Hillstars will host Old England at Cobbla, Comfort entertain Mandeville United, while Villa United and Hopewell will clash at Brooks Park. All games begin at 3 p.m., with allocation for extra time and penalties.
The competition began last Thursday with defending champions Downs getting the better of Porus 4-2 on penalties after the two had played to a 0-0 draw.
Last Sunday, Alrick Swimmer's goal gave Mile Gully a 1-0 win over George's Valley, while New Green whipped Star Liner 6-0. There were two goals apiece for Milton Christopher and Kashwayne Miller, while Norman Wright and Cedric Griffiths had single strikes.
On Thursday, Kendal collected points owing to the non-registration of Young Diamonds, while a decision will have to be made on the Cobbla vs Allied United matchup after bad light forced an end to the proceedings at 0-0.
- Howie Chin Prep School league
The Manchester FA/Howie Chin Prep School league kicked off last week Friday with hosts Mt St Joseph Prep and Emmanuel Prep playing to a 1-1 draw.
In a subsequent matchup, Belair had a 3-1 win over Emmanuel. Scorers for Belair were Jordan Jones, Kimani Mungle and Neville Graham. Kishan Hassleden got Emmanuel's consolation effort.
The next set of games will be hosted at Belair on December 2.
The competition is played in honour of former Brumalia House/Locker Room managing director and Manchester FA executive, Howie Chin, who died last year.
- Clarendon Claro KO round-up
Host team Bucknor United kicked off the 2011-12 Clarendon FA Claro Knockout competition last weekend with a 3-2 win over Coffals. Earlier, Rock River hammered Roadsville 6-1.
Oniel Grant got the afternoon's goal feast going in the second minute, and by the time he added his second in the 34th the score was 4-0.
Oraine Walters (57th) and Krishan Steer (78th) made it 6-0 after the half-time break, before Raymone Taylor grabbed a consolation for the losers in the 81st minute.
On Tuesday, Jamalco, courtesy of a 27th-minute strike from Rohan Smith edged Milk River 1-0 while Woodhall with the help of a double strike from Rayon Roberts, defeated Gimme-Me-Bit 3-0.
On Thursday, York Town and Little Brazil scored 1-0 wins over Four Paths and Original Hazard, respectively.
The competition continues today with two matches: Kemps Hill vs New Bowens and Hypermistic vs Central High at the Waterwells football field. Tomorrow: Black Stars vs Longwood at Kemps Hill and Longsville vs Springfield.
- Street Gun tournament tomorrow
Guns will go barking - albeit in a friendly manner - tomorrow at the Lincoln range, as the Manchester Rifle and Pistol Club (MRPC) hosts its third staging of National Street Gun Championship.
The Street Gun championships is a locally crafted simulation of gun-play scenes, confronting firearm holders. It seeks to test a firearm holder's agility, response time, accuracy and general fitness. Regular firearms will be admitted while rounds can be purchased on site.
Walk through is at 10 a.m. while action in all classes begins at 10:30. Five stages will be shot, with the accumulated winner on points adjudged the champion.
The one-day championships carries a mandatory registration charge for competitors as well as an admission cost for spectators. The organisers have promised safe and ample parking.
- Jamalco football awards tonight
The usually glittering awards ceremony for the Jamalco Football League will be hosted this evening at the Jamalco Employees Sports Club, starting at 7:00.
Top Hill, who defeated Napoli 4-3 in an exciting final last month, are expected to pocket a lot of the spoils, including top goalscorer, player of the finals, and the grand prize of $150,000.
- Portmore/St Catherine Domino League
Defending Champions Caribbean Classic will play away to Correctional Services as the two meet in an Impulse-sponsored Portmore/St Catherine Domino League match tomorrow morning.
Both teams are coming off wins over Passagefort United (300-270), and Masterpiece (300-275), respectively, in last Sunday's opening fixtures and it should be an exciting affair. In other games, Spring Village oppose Hurricane; Ackee Pod take on Masterpiece; Seamaster challenge Right Stuff; Westchester Nuckuz welcome Eradication; Ken's Wildflower host Fort International; Triple X Old Harbour Bay play Caymanas Track; and Garveymeade entertain ISCF. Home teams are named first and all games begin at 11:30 a.m.
- Colin Fagan Domino League presentation set for December 3
The Colin Fagan South East St Catherine Constituency Domino League will have its presentation at Ken's Wildflower Sports Bar and Lounge on Saturday, December 3, starting at 6 p.m. Passagefort United are the champions for the second time, after they came from behind to snatch a 250-240 win over Waterford in a highly fuelled match recently. The prizes for the top four teams are as follows: first $50,000, second $25,000 third, $15,000, and fourth $10,000.
- Colours look for three-peat
Colours are eyeing their third straight title in the Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Portmore Cricket League at the Bridgeport sports ground next Sunday.
But this time around it will not be easy for them, as they have formidable opponents in Portmore Pines.
Pines, with twin brothers Damion and André Bryce and young cricketer Terrence Brown in their line-up, are the team that shocked Colours last year and won the Portmore leg of Social Development Commission Twenty-20 community cricket league. Pines lost in the semi-finals of the SDC tourney this year to Washington CC. Colours defeated Washington in that final. Colours will hinge their hopes on Robert Weir, Delroy Morgan, Ramon Senior, Bryan Latore, and all-rounder Kerry Scott.
In semi-final action last Sunday at the Bridgeport Sports Ground, Portmore Pines, led by Damion Bryce's third century of the season (107), surprised Ken's Wildflower by 45 runs. In the other semi-final at Portsmouth ground, Colours dispatched Belmont by 30 runs.
- Colin Fagan knock-out kicks off
The 2011-2012 season of the Colin Fagan-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League knockout competition kicks off tomorrow with a uniform parade and a double-header at the Passagefort field, which starts at noon with a meet-and-greet session with the sponsors and league officials. The matches on are Bridgeport versus Hellshire United at 1 p.m. and East Portmore Portas versus Braeton United in the feature at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, in league action last Sunday, Hellshire United, with goals from Kemar Lindsay and Leetham Cato, carved out a 2-1 win over Braeton United in the opening game of a double-header at the Hellshire field. In the opening match at the venue, Bridgeport and Daytona played out a 0-0 stalemate.
- Portmore score 12
Red Stripe Premier League kingpins Portmore United, led by a four-timer from veteran striker Roen Nelson, swamped Division Two side Ensom City 12-0 in second-round action of the LIME St Catherine FA 'Happy' Sutherland knockout competition at the Ferdie Neita Park last Tuesday.
Tremaine Stewart netted two goals, while there was a goal apiece for Michael Spence, Andrew Christie, Eric Vernan, Ricardo Morris, Sean Paul and Damarley Samuels. In another game, Mark Walters struck a double in the 24th and 86th minutes and Oneil Fuller added another as Rodwood booted Portsmouth 3-0.
In a rescheduled game last Thursday, defending champions Frazer's Whip made it to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Treadways. Five other teams have also booked quarter-final spots. They are Christian Pen, McCook's Pen, De La Vega City, Bodles and Old Harbour Bay.
