11-y-os face-off
An intense battle is expected at today's go-kart meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston, where 11-year-old Jonathan Law and his old rival, Joshua Sirgany, also 11, clash in the Rotax Mini Max Class to determine who will be the 2011 champion.
Though Law is on top of the points tables, Sirgany, who two weeks ago put on an awesome performance at the Homestead track in Florida, USA, still has an outside chance of upsetting the applecart.
The first race is set to get under way at 10 a.m. It will be the final go-kart race meet of the year.
"Law has to do very badly to lose," said Neil Williams, one of Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) directors.
Apart from the Mini Max title, Law is hoping to also take his first Abe Ziadie Memorial Trophy, which goes to the JKA driver of the year. He is third, behind Peter Moodie Jr and Collin Daley in that order.
Moodie is looking forward to retaining the Rotax Masters title, but if he slips, could lose it to Garth Genus. Daley, who was another big performer at the Homestead meet, is expected to win the Rotax Junior title ahead of William Myers and Matthew Williams.
There will be an handicap race in memory of the late Abe Ziadie, the former JKA president who was murdered on Constant Spring Road, in St Andrew, more than a decade ago.
Homage will also be paid to one of the rising stars of karting, Dane Lawson, who perished earlier this year in a motor vehicle accident along Trafalgar Road, in the same parish.
