English Racing - Caddie Master will triumph

Today's racing takes place at Doncaster, Newbury and Mussel-burgh, with Wolverhampton chipping in with evening racing as usual.

News coming out of England is that the Professional Jockeys' Association (PJA) has welcomed the revisions in the controversial whip rules, announced by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) last week Thursday.

According to the sportinglife.com website, PJA chief executive Kevin Darley said it has been the most challenging time for jockeys in decades, and they have shown considerable restraint in recent weeks.

"The PJA has endeavoured to engage constructively with the BHA by suggesting amendments to the whip rules that would retain appropriate constraints on acceptable use but make them workable in practice for the majority of jockeys.

"These changes are a step in the right direction, but we have no doubt that there is still more to be done. The rules and penalties as amended are still too strict, and there will inevitably be more difficulties to overcome in the weeks and months ahead.

In particular, the PJA will continue to press the BHA concerning the period that minor offences remain on a jockeys' record. Twelve months is far too long", said Darley.

Amendments

The number of uses per race for the whip by jockeys remain at seven for the Flat and eight over jumps, but a number of changes to the structure for penalties have come into effect re the amendments.

Recently, top National Hunt jockeys, 16-time champion Tony McCoy and Ruby Walsh, were suspended for five and 10 days, respectively, for violating the rules. But their suspensions were downgraded under the new amendments.

Today at Newbury in the 15th race over hurdles, we like the look of McCoy's mount, CADDIE MASTER (9-2), over three miles and 100 yards in a field of 12.
