Sporting Central clip Village 2-1

Sporting Central Academy continued to advertise themselves as arguably the best road team in the 2011-12 Red Stripe Premier League when they clipped Village United 2-1 at the Trelawny Stadium yesterday.

Sporting Central, who increased their tally to 19 points, got both goals from the boots of Levaughn Williams. Village, who were left languishing at the bottom of the standings with five points, got their consolation goal from Dino Williams.

"It was a fairly good game for us, we came here with the intention of taking all three points and we succeeded in doing that," said Rohan Robinson, coach of Sporting Central.

He added: "It is just a pity that we gave up that late goal as we wanted to keep a clean sheet."

With the game just two minutes old, Sporting Central should have taken the lead when Hughan Gray broke free before the goal, but he fumbled and lost possession.

Three minutes later, Village also squandered a chance when Shavar Campbell fired wide under pressure.

Midway the half, Village enjoyed a prolonged period of dominance, but despite creating opportunities through Shaunavan McKenzie and Williams, they failed to make it count in a goalless first half.

The second half started with Village's Williams wasting chances in the 50th and 52nd minutes. First, the striker fired straight at the goalkeeper, then shooting the second opportunity wide.

Spirited attack

Sporting Central launched a spirited attack in the 59th minute and it led to their opening goal. Williams (Levaughn) capitalised on a defensive error and made no mistake, booting past the goalkeeper, making the score 1-0.

With Village under pressure and struggling to leave their half of the field, Sporting Central doubled their lead in the 80th minute when Williams, finding himself with space before the goal, calmly slotted home, making the score 2-0.

With time running out and Village under assault from their fans - who were quite vocal in cursing the players - Williams (Dino) got the team's consolation goal in the 90th minute when he pounced on a cross and fired home easily, making the final score 2-1.

"Our problem is that we are missing too many easy chances," said Village United's coach Kendall Mercury. "We got too many chances today to come out of this game without even a point."
