Smart-Macaulay, Turner take top titles

Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory's Sekai Smart-Macaulay and Dania Turner of Vaz Preparatory flourished as they emerged overall champion boy and girl at last weekend's Inter-Prep Schools Martial Arts Championships.

The tournament, which was held at the Stella Maris Preparatory School last Saturday, saw over 280 participants from 19 schools taking part in the event. The youngsters participated in five disciplines, including Kata Patterns, Kumite Sparring, Traditional Weapons, Creative Weapons, and Team Kata.

Smart-Macaulay was proud of his achievements.

"I feel good because this is the best tournament I have ever had," said the nine-year-old. He added that during the tournament he defeated one of his main rivals for the first time and it made him "feel very proud".

"I won three gold medals and two first-place trophies, and so I am very happy with my performances," said Smart-Macaulay, who competed in all five disciplines.

Turner was also very delighted with her efforts.

"I am feeling good," said the 10-year-old Turner. "I am so glad that I won the trophy. I worked hard to win this year because I always practise and I maintained a good standard in the event."

Smart-Macaulay's efforts also enabled his school to retain their title. Sts Peter and Paul amassed 228 points to win the championships ahead of Vaz 166. They were followed by Hillel Academy (72), Amy Bailey (68), Quest (64), United Centre (61), Morris Knibb (52), Mom Love (29), Stella Maris (20), Portmore Missionary (15), Holy Childhood (14), Porters Centre for Knowledge (12), and St Aloysius Primary (12).
