Scholarship recipients mingle with donors
Dr Victor Page, founding chairman of the Bustamante Foundation who now resides in England, recently visited Jamaica. While here, he met with members of the foundation's scholarship committee, including the three most recent winners Darcia Thomas (2009), Annabelle Robertson (2010) and Megan Elizabeth Auden (2011).
These three scholars are currently pursuing medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona, where the scholarships are tenable. Fund-raising for the scholarships are done in the United Kingdom by Dr Page.
Since its inception, in the early 1970s, well over 100 scholarships and some bursaries have been awarded. Both the foundation chairman and members of the scholarship committee were lauded by three of the scholars who expressed gratitude for the awards. They had high praises for the work of Sir Alexander Bustamante and Lady Bustamante in whose honour the scholarships are named. They said the scholarships had significantly helped to defray their personal expenses.
Present at the meeting were Dr Beverly Pereira, Dr Joyce Robinson, Dr Sheila Wynter, Dr Sonia Harris, Dr Evadne Williams, Joseph and Clare MacPherson, Nora Strudwick, and Seragh and Effie Lakasingh who hosted the event.
