Music is my best friend, says DJ Blu

Having transitioned from a sales and marketing representative into a top-flight disc jockey, 28-year-old Oswald Soutar, popularly known as DJ Blu, is totally consumed by his musical passion and wants to become the best in the business.
The Kingston-born owner and founder of Konsequence Sound System, who has made Montego Bay his home, is now considered one of the best disc jockeys in western Jamaica.
"Music is my best friend," remarked Soutar. "I have been doing music for 16 years. I started when I was 12 years old. At that time, I began compiling my music from different genres and sneaked out of the house to go to parties. I loved music that much."
When DJ Blu is not mixing music on Links FM or delivering a great vibe at parties, he enjoys watching cartoons and chilling with his friends. He also works with the Margaritaville Group and has travelled to The Cayman Islands, Miami, and Canada because of music.
Interestingly, his moniker, 'Blu', came as a result of a childhood incident that allowed the name to stick even to this day.
Blue eyes
"After I was born, interestingly, my eyes took longer than normal to open, but when they finally did, my family realised they were blue," said Soutar. "So, ever since I was a child, they used to call me Blu and it stuck with me till it became my stage name."
While many persons may believe the job of a disc jock is without challenges, DJ Blu sought to clear the air, arguing that it is not as easy as jumping on a bicycle and pedalling.
"Imagine having 2,000 people at a party in front of you and no two persons are the same," reasoned Soutar. "As a DJ, you have to know how to please the crowd, and that's where the hard part comes in. You must keep your eyes and ears open to learn about the audience."
Around the turntables, Soutar describes himself as fun-loving, energetic, jovial, charismatic, and a thinker.
"I am the deejay. My fans will never hear me 'juggle' the same way like other DJs. When you hear DJ Blu in a party, you know it's a different vibe and a different energy being brought to you," Soutar said. "That is what gives me a competitive edge over others."
