Needed: better access to wharves for the disabled

THE EDITOR, Sir:

On Monday, March 5, I went to the wharves in Kingston to collect some personal effects. I had done this before, about three years ago, when I was better able to get around.

I asked at the gate for a friend to be allowed in with me, as I didn't think I could manage alone. This request was refused. I was also not allowed to use a wheelchair, so I used crutches.

I felt that I was severely at a disavantage, and had to walk more than I have walked in the last year.

The pain in my back, one leg, and my shoulders was really bad, but I still had to go to the cashiers' office, although this meant that I had to walk a further 100 yards.

So, I urge disabled people, to have their goods to have a named physically fit Jamaican on them, so that you do not have to endure the pain I did on March 5.

I was not the only disabled person at the wharves.

I understand that this is a restricted area, but better facilities should be provided for the disabled, including wheelchair use. Having someone to assist the disabled would also be helpful.
