Reintroduce civics in schools

Published:Saturday | August 4, 2012 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

After reading Greg Christie's discourse to the Rotary Club some time ago and Ian Boyne's analysis of same on July 1, 2012, these few thoughts have come to mind.

As the depressing headlines remind us, almost daily, of the deepening corruption and duplicity in our society, it would seem that there is no accountability and nearly anyone can be bought. These negatives are now so commonplace that the general public has come to accept the unacceptable with tired resignation.

Young people and the not-so-young seem not to be motivated to do what is right, but to do 'what is best for me' and the devil take the hindmost.

Warped values

A certain mindset prevails that considers lying, cheating and stealing to be wrong only if discovered. Consider the beautiful prayer that is our national anthem. Has it become mere words to so many of our people, including some parliamentarians and other politicians?

While I am of the firm belief that human beings learn their morals and their manners at home, I am left to wonder why such an important subject as civics was ever removed from the school curriculum.

Reintroducing this subject would be a small step, but a positive one.

Please, Education Minister Ronald Thwaites, give it some thought.
