Carifolk season on this weekend

The CariFolk Singers began hosting its annual season of concerts at the Little Theatre, Tom Redcam Avenue, Kingston 5, yesterday. There are two concerts left. You can still catch the singers tonight and tomorrow at 8.

Titled 'All Tings Jamaican', the season is Carifolk's contribution to Jamaica's celebration of 50 years of Independence. It presents snippets of the country's musical journey and highlights the playfulness, resilience and spiritual strength of our people. It captures Jamaican folk music: traditional and creative.

All Tings Jamaican also recognises the more contemporary outgrowths and achievements of genres like mento, revival and reggae, which are all deeply rooted in folk music.

With its flair for total theatre, The Carifolk Singers is in fine form utilising singing, movements, mime and drama in a performance that blends Jamaica present and past. It pays tribute to Jamaican greats who have given decades of festival music, and to children for injecting vibrancy and spirit into Jamaican culture. The performance also presents glimpses of Jamaican everyday life.

Folk music is an important component of the outward expression of lived experiences emitted and emitting from the heart and soul of a people.

Within the folk music lies vital information on all aspects of the life of a people, i.e., history, politics, economics, social practices, cosmology and everything else. Folk music is a channel through which Jamaicans wrote and continue to write their history.
