Gay teacher fights to keep job

AP: A gay teacher is fighting to get her job back after she says she was fired by a Roman Catholic high school in Ohio when her mother's obituary appeared in a newspaper with the name of her partner.

The long-time teacher's attorney disclosed yesterday that they plan to file a complaint this week with the city of Columbus, which prohibits firings based on sexual orientation.

Carla Hale says she was fired in March after an anonymous letter sent to school administrators drew attention to the obituary listing her partner's name.

Some current and former students have rallied behind the physical education teacher. They've started an online petition that has collected around 100,000 supporters.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus says school employees can't go against the teachings of the church.
