Devon House - unsafe, unwelcoming chill spot

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I was so distraught and infuriated on Friday, May 17, 2013 when I went to Devon House. Upon reaching, I realised that there was yellow tape around most of the trees which surrounded a wide area where persons would sit and relax.

I thought at first that it was a crime scene; however, everybody was doing business as usual. I realised that those parts had been made out of bounds for patrons. I wanted to sit and talk, so I went on the opposite side where I lay in the grass, because there weren't any chairs available.

Upon having a conversation with my partner, I heard a voice say, "You cannot stay here. Over this side is not for persons to use." I was so annoyed because there are few seats. They barred the area where the majority of seating is available. I decided to sit in the grass but was ordered to vacate the area.

Can anyone imagine the foolishness and stupidity of this public space?

In addition, I got up to purchase ice cream and had to be walking and eating. Not only that, buildings were being renovated, with a lot of board falling, which caused a lot of dust. This is how they expect people to be treated? My health could have been affected.

In light of this, I believe if such major construction and renovation is going to take place, the operators of Devon House should close the facility and not sell anything for consumption. This place is not conducive for persons to eat, laugh and play.
