Roll out to Toss & Roll Salad Bar
Krysta Anderson, Gleaner Writer
Recently, Jamaicans have become more in tune with their health and a major part of this regime is all about our diet - the way we eat. Food rolled up to the new one-stop salad and wrap spot, Toss & Roll, to find out more about their wholesomely savoury menu.
Toss & Roll Salad Bar opened its doors on May 10 and Jermaine Bailey, part-owner of the food establishment, told Food, "The concept of Toss & Roll started with my sister-in-law Shanna Lee Bennett (part-owner) who wanted to provide a healthier breakfast option to a few corporate companies in New Kingston and Liguanea. My wife Keisha (another business partner) and I would assist her with sales and also give advice on strategies for her business."
The business, Bailey pointed out, shifted with Bennett's migration, but he maintained, "She is still a part of our operations, giving advice on menu planning and new items we plan to add in the future."
The Baileys have been holding down the health food fort since then, pushing forward in providing healthy meal options that are not necessarily vegetarian, breaking away from traditional beans and ital stews. They instead offer low-calorie, low-fat and high-protein meals. "Our target market is people who want to eat healthy, all-natural food, or those who want an alternative from the regular fast foods. We are very big on our meals being fresh, so we prepare our ingredients daily to ensure our customers get the freshest and healthiest meals possible," he ended.
To achieve this, getting the right supplier was important. "Getting the right supply of fresh vegetables and protein was very important. From the beginning, we sought to find key suppliers who would give us the wholesome ingredients we wanted to serve to our customers." He continues, "Our vegetables are fresh from the farm, without any preservatives and hand-cut daily, right in our store. Our meats are freshly done and we stay far from using preservatives and MSG."
Preparations
The meals are prepared right in front of you, affording you the option to choose your own combinations. Meal options range from delectable salads, sandwiches and wraps made from, but not limited to, vegetables : lettuce, tomato, peppers, green and sweet; black olives, onions, red cabbage as well as protein such as chicken cold cuts, tuna or shrimp, and can be served with cheese in the mix or with a side dressing.
Toss & Roll also offers green tea coolers in three flavours - watermelon, mango and orange - served with slices of hand-cut natural fruits. The coolers contain green tea extract, which aids in increasing the metabolic rate as well as nourishing the skin. It is also good for regulating diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure,
Toss & Roll places value on customer service so they have chosen polite and competent members of staff to satisfy their customers' dining needs.
