THE EDITOR, Sir:
As president of the Jonathan Grant High School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), I write in response to the letter to the editor written by Frustrated Parent on June 1, 2013. My response in this regard seeks to:
1. Shed some light on the inaccurate statement that the PTA's method of dealing with complaints is a joke.
2. Indicate that the communication channel utilised to resolve issues has been consistently successful.
The PTA of Jonathan Grant High School elected its new executive in January 2013 and has been receiving commendations over the short period because of its outstanding track record. This executive is very solution oriented in the most unconventional way.
Whereas the trend of many PTAs is to voice their concerns in meetings and waste productive hours in quarrels, our strategy is to take parents' concerns, present them to the principal privately, and bring speedy resolution.
This executive has presented suggestion sheets, telephone number (319 7955) and email address (jonathan-grant-pta@googlegroups.com) where parents can communicate their concerns and have matters dealt with in a cordial manner.
Over the period, we were able to resolve several sensitive cases through mediation with the principal, who made direct contact with the relevant parents. I must applaud the parents who see value in this cordial channel of communication and have benefited from the results.
As it relates to the new rule ('no plastic shoes'/'no plastic-coloured watches' effective September 2013), this matter will be discussed at length with the principal in the coming week. This forward movement is again based on feedback received from several concerned parents.
In closing, let me use this medium to encourage all parents of the Jonathan Grant High School PTA to utilise the email, suggestion sheet and telephone methods for expressing their concerns. Note also that where the PTA fails to address your concerns, you will then be in a position to challenge the team to do better.
Rose Marie Headley-Smith
PTA President 2013-15
Johnathan Grant High School
