Evidence of a healthy relationship

Published:Tuesday | July 30, 2013 | 12:00 AM

I would like at the outset to commend the consistent effort on the part of the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) to forge and maintain a healthy and enduring relationship with the unions and the stakeholders operating on the Port of Kingston. This is clearly the manifestation of mature leadership on the part of all involved.

The new heads of agreement covering the four-year period, November 2012 to October 2016, is of critical importance to the overall development of the Port of Kingston, which constitutes an important part of the economic life and development of Jamaica. It is, without a doubt, of strategic importance to the overall success of the Jamaican economy.

Indeed, the sustained stability and industrial peace on the port makes it a most attractive destination in the eyes of the global shipping community. This offers the guarantee that those who use its facilities will receive, in addition to a warm reception, efficient quality service at all times.

Looking ahead, the impending opening of the expanded Panama Canal will provide enormous opportunities for the region, including Jamaica, to showcase its potential and ability to treat with the new and exciting challenges of the maritime industry; and with the upgrading earmarked for the Kingston wharves, I am satisfied that the capacity exists to meet the emerging demand that will ensue.

All of this brings into sharp focus the relevance and importance of the recently signed historic four-year wage agreement between the SAJ and the unions representing its employees, and I salute all involved on a job well done in the national interest.
