After the smoked had cleared, Tyroun Kenton from Trelawny was named the 2013 CB Pan Chicken Champion. The final was held at the Waterfront, Ocean Boulevard last Sunday, November 24.

Kenton received cash from CB Chicken and a business grant from First Heritage Co-operative Credit Union (FHC), as well as one year's supply of CB Chicken and one year's supply of Grace Tomato Ketchup.

The pans certainly did heat up on the waterfront as thousands gather to support their favourite pan chicken vendor while enjoying giveaways and jerked chicken with their friends and families at the explosive event. Despite the rains, there was a constant stream of persons throughout the day.

The largest event in the CB Pan Chicken series, the grand final combines all the excitement of the regional eliminations into one event. Attendees had the opportunity to sample delicious pan chicken, Grace Soup, National snacks, Rainforest burgers, refreshments by Red Stripe and Tropicana Tropics, with sweet treats and ice cream from Nestlé.

The celebrity chef cook-off hosted by the energiser bunny, Jenny Jenny, had patrons in a frenzy as they got to cheer on their favourite celebrity chef in the competition which included Kellian Reid, Terri-Karelle Reid, Hansle Parchment, David Brown, Chinloya Allen and Pretty boy Floyd. Persons also had the opportunity to vie for prizes from the sponsors by competing in competitions such as dancing, modelling and chicken eating.

The Grace Tomato Ketchup 'Grace ketch di taste' sauce competition was also won by Kenton, with Barrington Williams from St Catherine and Leon Mitchell from Clarendon placing second and third, respectively.

Marketing Officer Carolyn Johnson told Food, "We were really impressed with the standards - how the contestants set up and how they operated. There was no clear winner and we had to really deliberate. We had to really analyse the entries. It was obvious that they put a lot of effort in presentation."

take more risks

Speaking on behalf of the panel of judges, Chef Simone Wright told the contestants, "You need to take more risks. When it's a competition, you want to stand out. You want to be different so, therefore, you can't do what everybody is doing. Find that secret ingredient, and go out on a branch, on a leaf. Go all out."

After being declared the winner, Kenton told the crowd: "I feel so good. First of all, I have to give God thanks. I've been doing chicken for 15 years. I must give thanks to my father, he taught me a lot".

Second and third places went to Leon Mitchell from Clarendon and Triston Bernal from St Thomas.

They both received $150,000 from CB Chicken and one case of one-gallon Grace Tomato Ketchup.

The National Kiddies Village offered children free rides, clowns, and face-painting throughout the day, with the event culminating with live, high-energy performances from Kevin Downswell, Tarrus Riley, and I-Octane.
