Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) president, Kim Clarke, and his full managing committee (board of directors) were returned to serve another one-year term at the association's annual general meeting, on Wednes-day last week. Clarke reaffirmed his commitment to the service of the SAJ membership and his intention to drive ongoing projects to completion. He said the SAJ, under his watch, would continue, where necessary, to lobby the relevant authorities to the benefit of the association's members and the wider community.

Clarke also announced that the SAJ would be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2014. The association will be marking this milestone with a series of events beginning with a church service on January 19, 2014 at the Kingston Parish Church at 8 a.m. Other plans will include a banquet during Maritime Awareness Week and a Run/Walk currently scheduled for mid-year.

Clarke is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Maritime & Transport Group of Companies.

The team leading the association for a second year is comprised of: Denise Lyn Fatt, vice-president; Roger Hinds, immediate past president; Michael Bernard, past president, Harry Maragh, past president; Grantley Stephenson, past president; Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester; Captain Diedrich Suendermann; Joseph Lowe and William Brown. Charles Johnston remains an honourary member of the Managing Committee (MC) for two more years; and Trevor Riley, general manager, is ex-officio member of the MC.

Clarke will lead the team during a period when several milestone events should be taking place in the local and regional shipping industry, including commencement of the implementation of a Port Community System; privatisation of the Kingston Container Terminal and decisions concerning the feasibility of the announced Chinese plans to develop a port and logistics hub in the Portland Bight area, including the Goat Islands.
