10 things you didn't know about Dr Lloyd Waller

Lloyd Waller currently serves as the head of the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona and lectures research methods and methodology in the Department.

Dr Waller also lectures principles and practices of electronic governance in the Department of Government as well as business research methods at the doctorial level in the Cave Hill School of Business, Barbados.

Dr Waller holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in sociology and social policy from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, with a specialisation in information and communication for development and advanced research methods. His thesis, 'ICT for Whose Development: Towards the development of methodologies and analytical tools for understanding and explaining the ICT for Development Phenomenon', attempts to develop advanced methodological tools for studying the ICT for development phenomenon. His recent book, The role of Discourse in ICT for Development: Lessons from Jamaica (2009), extends this work by looking at representations of ICT for development initiatives in Jamaica.

Dr Waller is the deputy director of the Centre for Leadership and Governance (UWI, Mona) as well as the field and logistic survey manager for the Boxill/RJR Polls. Dr Waller sits on several committees at the University of the West Indies (Mona). Today, Outlook Magazine shares 10 things not previously known about Dr Lloyd George Waller.

1. Dr Lloyd Waller is a foodie. He provides his friends with advice on restaurants. He believes that, in his former life, he was a world-famous food critic, but his home is not equipped with a stove!

2. While at Wolmer's, he took eight CXC subjects and passed only one - principles of business. Nevertheless, he managed to gain a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, at the age of 31, after working hard over the years to achieve a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in the sociology of development from the University of the West Indies, Mona.

3.He worked as a bartender for a period while completing his PhD in New Zealand. During that period, he learnt how to mix cocktails and is known for his strawberry daiquiri, lychee vodka martini, Royal Orchid, and all permutations of sangria.

4. He is a Trekky - meaning he is a Star Trek fan. He has watched every episode of every Star Trek movie at least three times. He is fascinated with the Vulcan race and has tried to emulate many of their principles, particularly those of logic, reason, and management of emotions.

5. He's an oenophile with a preference for Malbec, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet or any fusion of these.

6. Dr Lloyd Waller is the quintessential project manager. He has a 95 per cent project success rate. The five per cent represents the many failed diets that he has been on.

7. An avid reader, he lists his favourite books as The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, The Prince by the political theorist Niccol Machiavelli, as well as Art of War by Sun Tzu.

8. Correspondingly, he lists his all-time favourite movie as The Devil Wears Prada. The lead role, played by Meryl Streep, reminds him of his favourite boss who he credits for a lot of his administrative, managerial knowledge, skills, and office craft.

9. The NZAID Scholar served as an I-VOTE observer for the 2008 US Presidential Election 2008.

10. Dr Lloyd Waller is an avid gamer who has a PS3 and an Xbox gaming console. He is looking to trade up to the PS4 and Xbox One. His favourite game is God of War. He also enjoys playing the board game Monopoly and has a collection of eight different versions of this game.
