WESTERN BUREAU:Having capped the 17-year drought in midfield, the 2013/2014 Premier League Champs, Montego Bay United Football Club, are on a roll.

In 17 years, no team in Montego Bay has won the cup, and as a result, the celebration seems like a never-ending one. It has been exactly one month since the 'ballers' took home the title, displacing the Kingston-based Waterhouse Football Club.

On Friday, June 13, as many celebrated the win of the host nation in the kick-off of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, members and affiliates of Montego Bay United were again fêted, this time by general manager of the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Resort, Luis Gonzalez and his culinary team.

Noel Sloley Jr's Jamaica Tours Limited provided transportation for the team, known to have transformed the lives of hundreds of youngsters in western Jamaica.

INNER-CITY SCHOOLS VISITS

Their Iberostar fête followed a series of activities at a number of inner-city schools, including the Green Pond Primary and High and St James High. "Most of the players are from inner-city communities, so we go back into the schools in the areas and present memorabilia such as photos", explained a proud Sandra Christie, director of administration at the club.

Boasting that her club has the greatest retention record in the league, Christie said, each year, an average of 175 youth are touched by the Montego Bay FC.

"And it is not only in playing football, the youngsters who come to us are taught social etiquette, swimming, and a number of other sports," she said.
