The new French ambassador to Jamaica Jean-Michel Despax and his wife, Line, arrived in the island just in time to celebrate their country's 225th year of independence on Wednesday, July 14.

It was a night of fine wine and celebration as each guest was greeted by the chargé d'affaires Jean-Luc Wertheimer, the new ambassador, and his wife. With the ambassador arriving in the island the night before and so having not yet presented his credentials to the governor general, the formal proceedings was still in the hands of the very capable Wertheimer. In his brief presentation, Wertheimer introduced the ambassador, speaking of his qualifications in engineering, the long list of jobs he had held in government, and his past postings as ambassador that had included New York. His vast experience makes him perfectly equipped for his new assignment in Jamaica.

Wertheimer gave the customary nod to the ties between both countries. The long and strong ties were confirmed by minister of state in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Arnaldo Brown, who spoke on behalf of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade A.J Nicholson, who was off the island. The two men gave a toast to the future of both countries.

Guests continued the night enjoying great French wine and cuisine and getting acquainted with and welcoming the new 'ambassador on the block'.
