Screw it

Summer is in full swing, and the heat is uncomfortably sizzling. As we are just about to kick-start the long holiday weekend, many of us may choose to venture to the country for a little getaway, or have house lymes to celebrate the long and well-needed break from the rigours of work.

I recently came across a great line of screw top wines from Chile called Dancing Flame. This makes it an easy option to walk with to any gathering, or just enjoy in the comfort of any space you find yourself in without having to think of walking with a corkscrew. I know some of us do not always think that they can screw it and enjoy it, but this value-based wine is ideal for summer entertaining. Dancing Flame is available in five varietals, which cater to each person's individual preferences.

I generally favour white wines this time of year, and found their Pinot Grigio to be perfect with great citrus and floral notes. What I enjoyed most was how refreshing it was, not to mention the superbly great price. They also carry a Sauvignon Blanc, which is equally delightful and refreshing, and is a great wine to be enjoyed with or without food. I think that this is a great companion for any pool party that may exist while trying to beat the heat.

light-bodied red wine

The red varietals are also quite delightful and fall in the same model of screw tops. Their Pinot Noir is such a great light-bodied red wine that you may very well think of having it with breakfast. I certainly enjoy steak and eggs with toast and this Pinot Noir for a late morning breakfast, and it certainly set the right tone for the rest of the day. For its taste, think plums and black cherries with a tinge of spice, which is why I see this being a great breakfast starter or a light evening wine. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon both have very similar flavour profiles, but vary in intensity. I think if you are looking for an intense aroma and flavour, the Cabernet is the way to go. The Merlot is a great middle option, especially if you are undecided, having it alone or pairing it with food.

This particular range of wines are simple, easy-drinking wines and perfectly priced. On average, you may find a bottle somewhere in the region of J$1,050 per bottle, of course, plus tax, which in my opinion is a great value, although its packaging makes it look a lot more expensive. Give some serious thought to screw top wines as an option, they tend to be incredible value for money.

As you think of your weekend plans, think of wines that are easy and simple, and can be enjoyed anywhere.
