The CNN reports that Continental Flight 61 was flying from Brussels, Belgium, to the United States when the pilot apparently died of natural causes while at the controls.
The airline said the crew on the flight included an additional relief pilot who took the place of the deceased man.
The plane, a Boeing 777, landed safely at the Newark International Airport about an hour ago.
The deceased pilot was 61 years old and had been serving the airline for 21 years.
