New house speaker in Britain

British lawmakers have elected a new Speaker of the House of Commons after a scandal forced the previous speaker to resign last month.

John Bercow got the nod after three rounds of voting by members of parliament yesterday.

He was among 10 candidates who were being considered for the post.

Former speaker, Michael Martin, demitted office in the face of widespread public anger where it was discovered that members of parliament used state funds to pay for their personal expenses.

He’s the first speaker to be forced out of office since 1695.
