The CNN is reporting that nine people have been killed in Washington Metro train collision yesterday.

Washington DC Mayor Adrian Fenty said 76 people were taken to hospital, with two in critical condition.

He said officials have begun notifying the victims’ families and have been facilitating persons seeking information.

Mayor Fenty also said because there could be more bodies in the wreckage, the crash site is being treated as a rescue scene.

The crash occurred along Washington DC’s Red Line train route yesterday evening.

The Metro rail agency said both trains were on the same track, headed in the same direction.

They say the operator of the trailing train was killed in the crash.

Metro officials say they cause of the collision is not yet known and it will take days of investigation to be determined.
