Hosts England ended today’s opening day of the 2009 Ashes Series against Australia at Cardiff on 336 for seven after struggling on 90 for three at one stage.

After the loss of the three early wickets, Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood staged a fight back for England with a century stand.

The pair added 137 with Pietersen scoring 69 and Collingwood 64.

Andrew Flintoff, played his first Test since recovering from knee injury and Matt Prior also supported by adding 86 in just 95 balls. However, they were both dismissed by fast bowler Peter Siddle just before stumps.

Prior went for 56 while Flintoff scored 37.

Ravi Bopara, 3,5 and opener Andrew, 30, got good starts but failed to carry on.

Also picking up two wickets were Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus.

Australia seek to retain the Ashes after thrashing England 5-0 in the 2006-07 series, following England\'s 2-1 win in 2005.
